Dresden 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Five days is our 3-day itinerary , the full Baroque core, with two day trips added: Saxon Switzerland on day four, then Meissen and Moritzburg combined on day five. Book these before you go
- The Historic Green Vault timed ticket : mandatory, roughly €18, separate from every other museum pass.
- Nothing to pre-book for Saxon Switzerland, the Bastei Bridge is free, just catch an early S-Bahn.
- Check Dresden hotel rates : five nights is worth comparing weekly discounts against nightly ones.
Day 1: The Altstadt
Morning: The Frauenkirche, collapsed 15 February 1945, rebuilt 1993/94-2005 with roughly 4,000 salvaged original stones. Dome climb roughly €8-12.
Midday: The Zwinger’s courtyard is free; the Old Masters Picture Gallery, home to Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, sits inside the roughly €18 combined Zwinger house ticket.
Afternoon: Brühl’s Terrace, the Fürstenzug (a 102-meter mural of roughly 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles, the largest porcelain artwork in the world), and the Katholische Hofkirche, all free.
Evening: Sächsischer Sauerbraten or Eierschecke away from the priciest stretch near Neumarkt.
Day 2: The Residenzschloss and the Neustadt
Morning: The Historic Green Vault, mandatory timed ticket, roughly €18, not covered by the SKD combined ticket. It’s the site of the 25 November 2019 heist: around 21 jewels worth an estimated €100-123 million, five Remmo-clan defendants convicted May 2023, about 70% recovered in 2022, but the 62-carat Dresden White Diamond is still missing. The New Green Vault, Armoury, and Hausmannsturm tower don’t need a timed slot.
Afternoon: A Semperoper tour, roughly €15.
Evening: The Neustadt: the Kunsthofpassage’s “Funnel Wall” and the Goldener Reiter, free, plus Pfunds Molkerei, the 1879 dairy shop Guinness certified the world’s most beautiful.
Day 3: The Albertinum and the Elbe
Morning: The Albertinum (roughly €14): 19th-to-21st-century art including Caspar David Friedrich.
Afternoon: A paddle steamer with the Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt fleet, running since 1836, the world’s oldest and largest paddle-steamer fleet still operating.
Evening: The Blue Wonder bridge (1893) and, if you’re up for it, the Schwebebahn (1901), the oldest suspension railway of its kind still running.
Day 4: Saxon Switzerland
The Bastei Bridge is reachable by S-Bahn in roughly 35-45 minutes and is the standout day trip from Dresden, sandstone cliffs rising straight from the Elbe valley. Go before 9am to beat the tour buses. Combine it with a look at Königstein fortress if you want a fuller day; the bridge itself costs nothing.
Day 5: Meissen and Moritzburg
Morning: Meissen, roughly 33-40 minutes out, is the birthplace of European porcelain (the Meissen manufactory dates to 1710), with the Albrechtsburg castle above the town.
Afternoon: Moritzburg, roughly 30-40 minutes from Dresden and combinable with Meissen in a single day, is a Baroque hunting palace on a lake, sometimes called the “Cinderella” castle after the film shot there.
Evening: Back in Dresden for a final dinner, Quarkkäulchen or Sächsischer Kartoffelsalat if you haven’t tried them yet.
Is 5 days enough for Dresden?
Five days covers the full city core plus two well-chosen day trips, and it’s the point where a Dresden trip starts to feel like a proper look at Saxony rather than just its capital.
