Djerba 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Five days is the 4-day plan’s island core and mainland loop plus a genuine extra beach day, the point where this starts feeling like a resort week rather than a sightseeing trip. Shorter stay, the 4-day plan drops the extra beach day; longer, the 6-day plan onward spreads the culture out further and adds Zarzis. Full sight and food detail is in our Djerba guide .
Safety in brief: Tunisia is US Level 2, general terrorism risk, and the real do-not-travel zones are the far-south borders, not Djerba. The one relevant incident, a fatal shooting near El Ghriba Synagogue on 9 May 2023, was a single targeted event with no tourist-directed repeat since; security at the sites below is routine and visible.
Day 1: Houmt Souk and the beach
Morning in Houmt Souk: the covered souks, the fondouks, and the working fish auction at the port, then Borj el-Kebir (Borj Ghazi Mustapha), the 15th-16th-century fort, around 8 TND. Afternoon at a resort beach, Sidi Mahrès (the main strip, ~13 km) or quieter Aghir/La Seguia.
Day 2: El Ghriba, Djerbahood, and Guellala
Morning in Erriadh (Hara Seghira) for El Ghriba Synagogue, traditionally the oldest synagogue in Africa, its current building 19th-century on a site tradition holds back roughly 2,500 years; dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered. Walk the Djerbahood murals in the same village, around 150 artists and 300+ pieces since 2014. Afternoon in Guellala, roughly 450 working potters and the Guellala Museum (~10 TND).
Day 3: Beach and Djerba Explore Park
Beach in the morning, then Djerba Explore Park in Midoun for the afternoon: the Lalla Hadria Museum of Islamic art, a heritage village, and a crocodile farm holding around 400 Nile crocodiles (feeding 5pm), combined entry about 20 TND.
Day 4: Matmata and Tataouine mainland loop
A full day trip to the mainland, roughly 11 hours door-to-door. Matmata’s troglodyte Berber cave-homes, plus Hotel Sidi Driss (the interior set of Luke Skywalker’s home, still a working guesthouse), then Tataouine and Ksar Ouled Soltane, a fortified granary complex, and, if time allows, the hilltop villages of Chenini and Douiret. Day 5: A second beach day and Midoun’s market
Use the extra day to actually rest: a full day at whichever beach you haven’t tried yet, Aghir/La Seguia if day one was Sidi Mahrès, or the reverse. If it’s a Friday, work in Midoun’s Friday market in the late afternoon before dinner, it’s the island’s other big weekly market alongside Houmt Souk’s daily one.

One concrete tip: book the mainland loop for day four rather than day one or two, so you have a beach recovery day either side of the long drive. And the rule underneath everything money-related here: the Tunisian dinar is a closed currency, exchange only what you’ll spend and keep every receipt, since only around 30% is reconvertible on departure.
