Hangzhou 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Three days is the honest sweet spot for Hangzhou: West Lake and a tea village, Lingyin Temple properly rather than rushed, then Hefang Street and the Grand Canal. Short on time, the 2-day itinerary drops the tea village and the canal. More time, the 4 through 7-day plans add Xixi Wetland, museums, and day trips to Suzhou or the water towns.

Day 1: West Lake and a Longjing tea village
Walk the free West Lake causeways in the morning: the Su Causeway (built 1074, by poet-official Su Dongpo) and the Bai Causeway (built 822, by poet Bai Juyi, roughly 250 years earlier and by a different person, the two get merged in a lot of write-ups). Take the boat to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (¥55-70), the island on the ¥1 note. In the afternoon, head up to Meijiawu or Longjing tea village, both free to wander, for a tasting of real West Lake Longjing green tea straight from the growers, ¥10-80 a cup. Ask for Mingqian grade if you’re visiting in early spring, picked just before the Qingming festival in early April; picking season itself runs March through May. Close the day at Leifeng Pagoda (¥40) for the lake view, honest that the current structure is a 2002 rebuild over the 975 CE original, which collapsed in 1924.
Day 2: Lingyin Temple and Feilai Feng
Lingyin Temple and the adjoining Feilai Feng grottoes have been free since 1 December 2025, but only through a mandatory timed reservation via the Alipay or WeChat mini-program, booked 1 to 7 days ahead, with a daily cap, so lock this in before you land rather than assuming a walk-up ticket. The temple was founded in 328 CE; Feilai Feng carries more than 300 Buddhist rock carvings cut into the cliff face, including the well-known laughing Maitreya. Give the complex a full half-day; it rewards a slow walk more than a checklist visit.
Day 3: Hefang Street and the Grand Canal
Hefang Street in the morning, a free pedestrian stretch of old shopfronts, is the place for Dongpo Pork, Beggar’s Chicken, and West Lake Vinegar Fish; Louwailou, on the lakeside since 1848, is the one restaurant name here worth booking ahead for. In the afternoon or evening, head to Gongchen Bridge for a Grand Canal night cruise (around ¥100). Hangzhou is the Grand Canal’s southern terminus, and the canal carries its own UNESCO listing from 2014, a separate site and a separate year from West Lake’s own 2011 designation, so don’t treat them as one listing.
Know before you fly
China sits at US State Department Level 2, driven mainly by exit-ban and arbitrary-detention risk tied to business or legal disputes, not street crime, which is low; ordinary sightseeing carries very little of it. Day-to-day, the bigger friction is the language barrier, a translation app earns its keep, plus the fact that Hangzhou runs near-cashless on Alipay and WeChat Pay, and that Google, Maps, and WhatsApp are blocked by the Great Firewall, so a VPN installed before you leave home is worth more here than in most cities.
Is 3 days enough for Hangzhou?
Yes, for the core experience. Three days properly covers West Lake, a tea village, Lingyin Temple, and Hefang Street or the Grand Canal without rushing any of them, which is genuinely more than a lot of rushed 5-day itineraries manage. It skips Xixi Wetland and the museums; if those matter to you, the 4-day version adds the first and the 5-day adds the rest.

One concrete tip: set up Alipay and install a VPN before you fly, and reserve the Lingyin Temple slot the moment your dates are fixed. Both are five-minute jobs at home and half a lost day if you leave them for arrival.
