Istanbul 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Day 1: Sultanahmet and the big three
From Istanbul Airport (IST), the M11 metro into the city runs every 8-10 minutes, with a change to the M2 line for Sultanahmet; budget close to an hour and a fare in the 40-80 TRY range on an Istanbulkart . Land at Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) instead and you’re on the Asian side, a longer trip into the old city, so confirm which airport you’re using before booking a transfer.
Once you’re settled, book the Hagia Sophia upper gallery ticket (see above) for a morning slot, the earlier the better. Check the live prayer schedule on ayasofyacamii.gov.tr before you go, since closures shift daily. The ground floor is an active mosque, closed to sightseeing entirely; what euro25 buys foreigners is the upper gallery only, timed, and closed around all five daily prayers. Walk next door to the free Blue Mosque, dress code enforced, then duck into the Basilica Cistern, 1,950 TRY, cooler than the streets above and worth the hour for the two Medusa-head column bases. Close the day with simit and kumpir from a Sultanahmet Square street cart.
Is Hagia Sophia still free to visit?
No, not for tourists. The original worship floor is reserved for prayer and closed to sightseeing outright. What foreigners pay roughly euro25 (about $27-29, verify on site) for is the upper gallery only, timed and ticketed, with closures around all five daily prayers plus an extended Friday midday break. Free general entry ended when the building reconverted to a working mosque in 2020.
Day 2: Topkapi Palace, the bazaars and Suleymaniye
Topkapi Palace opens at 09:00 and tour groups arrive by mid-morning, so go early. The combined foreigner ticket (see above), or bought at the gate, costs 2,750 TRY and covers the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene church in one entry; there’s no separate Harem ticket anymore. It’s closed Tuesdays, last entry 16:00, and official listings sit within the Ministry’s muze.gov.tr museums portal.
From Topkapi, walk to the Grand Bazaar, check the day of the week first: it’s shut every Sunday and for 3-4 days around Eid. Opening prices run double or triple a realistic sale, so counter at 40-50% of the ask. If it’s Sunday, the Spice Bazaar a few minutes away is open daily and the better place to actually buy Turkish delight anyway. In the afternoon, climb to Suleymaniye Mosque, free, Mimar Sinan’s largest imperial mosque from the 1550s, with a fraction of the Blue Mosque’s crowds for comparable grandeur.
Is the Topkapi Harem a separate ticket?
No, not since the combined-ticket change. Foreigners now buy one 2,750 TRY entry covering the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene together; the old advice to book the Harem separately is stale. Go for the tilework and the imperial family’s private quarters, and budget at least two hours for the full complex, more if the Treasury room is busy.

Two days is enough for the greatest hits, not the whole city. Currency is the Turkish lira, running around 47 TRY to the dollar in mid-2026 and moving fast, so treat any lira figure here as a rough guide and verify on site.
