Day 1: Princes’ Islands
Take the Sehir Hatlari public ferry from Kabatas, directly opposite Dolmabahce Palace; it’s 75-100 minutes to Buyukada, roughly 130-140 TRY one-way with an Istanbulkart (verify, fares climb with inflation). Check departures on sehirhatlari.istanbul before you go. The island banned private cars outright, and since a 2020 crackdown on the horse-drawn phaetons, bicycles and electric carts do the job now. Rent one at the dock and ride the loop past the 19th-century mansions rather than sticking to the harbor strip.
Day 2: A Bosphorus cruise
Skip the tour boats clustered near Eminonu unless you specifically want commentary. The Sehir Hatlari long Bosphorus tour runs about 6 hours up to Anadolu Kavagi near the Black Sea mouth with a 2-3 hour shore break, for around euro12-15; a shorter 2-hour circle runs about 340 TRY. The cheapest version, the standard commuter ferry from Eminonu, Karakoy or Besiktas to Kadikoy or Uskudar, costs a few dollars and covers most of the same skyline in 15-20 minutes.
Day 3: Edirne
Direct buses leave close to hourly, first around 05:00, last around 23:00; the fastest covers the 2h15 route in just over two hours, budget 2h45 with traffic. The payoff is the Selimiye Mosque, Mimar Sinan’s masterpiece, quieter and less touristed than anything comparable back in Istanbul.
Day 4: Bursa
The ferry-plus-bus combination, an IDO or BUDO service to Mudanya followed by a 25-30 minute taxi or bus into central Bursa, takes about 1h40 on the water; a direct bus instead runs 3-5 hours depending on traffic. Count on 10-14 hours round trip once in-city time is added, a genuinely long day. The Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami), the Green Tomb and Green Mosque, and the weight of being Turkey’s first Ottoman capital make it worth the slog, but go in accepting it as a full-day commitment, not a stop bolted onto something else. Is Bursa worth a full day from Istanbul?
Yes, but only if you treat it as a dedicated day, not a half-day add-on to something else. Between the ferry or bus each way and the in-city time, the round trip runs 10-14 hours; trying to squeeze in a second stop the same day usually means shortchanging both. Go early, plan for the full day, and you’ll see the Grand Mosque, the Green Tomb and Green Mosque properly.
