2 Days From Istanbul (No Fake Day Trips)
Two days from an Istanbul base covers exactly two of the four real day trips: the Princes’ Islands and a Bosphorus cruise, both genuinely doable without a tour or advance booking. Add a day for Edirne , or go longer for Bursa and the rest .

Day 1: Princes’ Islands
Take the Sehir Hatlari public ferry from Kabatas, directly opposite Dolmabahce Palace; it’s 75-100 minutes to Buyukada, roughly 130-140 TRY one-way with an Istanbulkart (verify, fares climb with inflation). The island banned private cars outright, and since a 2020 crackdown on the horse-drawn phaetons, bicycles and electric carts do the job now. Rent one at the dock and ride the loop past the 19th-century mansions rather than sticking to the harbor strip; lunch at one of the island’s own restaurants beats anything right at the ferry dock. Buy your return ticket the day before if this falls on a June-August weekend, when boats fill up fast.
Do you need to book the Princes’ Islands ferry ahead?
No, not most of the year. The public ferry runs a fixed schedule and sells tickets at the pier same-day. The exception is summer weekends, June through August, when boats fill up; buy the day before or get to the pier by mid-morning instead of risking standing room only on the crossing.
Day 2: A Bosphorus cruise
Skip the tour boats clustered near Eminonu unless you specifically want commentary. The Sehir Hatlari long Bosphorus tour runs about 6 hours up to Anadolu Kavagi near the Black Sea mouth with a 2-3 hour shore break, for around euro12-15; a shorter 2-hour circle runs about 340 TRY. The cheapest version of all, the standard commuter ferry from Eminonu, Karakoy or Besiktas to Kadikoy or Uskudar, costs a few dollars and covers most of the same skyline in 15-20 minutes if the full tour doesn’t fit your day.
Is a paid Bosphorus cruise worth it over the public ferry?
Only for the sunset or dinner version, euro25-45 and worth reserving ahead in peak season since those genuinely sell out. For daytime sightseeing, the public ferry crossing to Kadikoy or Uskudar delivers most of the same palace-and-fortress skyline for a few dollars, and the long Sehir Hatlari tour splits the difference if you want the full run to the Black Sea mouth.
