7 Days From Istanbul (No Fake Day Trips)

Seven days from an Istanbul base is the full version: all four real day trips, a flex day, and the proper 2-day, 1-night Gallipoli and Troy overnight in Canakkale at the pace operators actually recommend. Trim to 6 days if a day’s tight, or see the 5-day plan to skip Gallipoli entirely.

Day 1: Princes’ Islands

Take the Sehir Hatlari public ferry from Kabatas, directly opposite Dolmabahce Palace; it’s 75-100 minutes to Buyukada, roughly 130-140 TRY one-way with an Istanbulkart (verify, fares climb with inflation). Check departures on sehirhatlari.istanbul before you go. The island banned private cars outright, and since a 2020 crackdown on the horse-drawn phaetons, bicycles and electric carts do the job now.

Day 2: A Bosphorus cruise

Skip the tour boats clustered near Eminonu unless you specifically want commentary. The Sehir Hatlari long tour runs about 6 hours up to Anadolu Kavagi near the Black Sea mouth with a 2-3 hour shore break, for around euro12-15. The cheapest version, the standard commuter ferry to Kadikoy or Uskudar, costs a few dollars and covers most of the same skyline in 15-20 minutes.

Day 3: Edirne

Day 4: Bursa

The ferry-plus-bus combination, an IDO or BUDO service to Mudanya followed by a 25-30 minute taxi or bus into central Bursa, takes about 1h40 on the water; a direct bus instead runs 3-5 hours. Count on 10-14 hours round trip once in-city time is added.

Day 5: A flex day, or Heybeliada

Build in one day with nothing booked; ferries and tour boats both run less reliably in bad weather than operators admit, and this absorbs a cancellation without wrecking the rest of the trip. If everything runs on schedule, use it for Heybeliada, the quieter second-largest Princes’ Island.

Day 6: Gallipoli, the travel day

This is the one leg on this list that refuses to compress into a single day, so with a full week available, take it at a reasonable pace. Travel to Canakkale, roughly 4.5-5.5 hours each way by road (300-320km), and arrive with the afternoon free for the Gallipoli peninsula’s battlefields and memorials. Can you visit Gallipoli and Troy in one day from Istanbul?

Technically yes, sensibly no. The round-trip drive alone eats 9-11 hours of a single day, leaving 1-2 hours at the actual sites after all that time on a bus. With a week to work with, there’s no reason to take the rushed version; spreading it across Days 6 and 7 gets you both sites properly instead of just driving past them.

Day 7: Troy, then home

Cover Troy in the morning, a further 30 minutes south of Canakkale and linked to the Gallipoli peninsula by a short ferry; official visiting hours sit within the Ministry’s muze.gov.tr museums portal. Head back to Istanbul in the afternoon, arriving by evening. This full 2-day, 1-night pace is what most reputable operators actually sell, rather than the rushed single-day version some still market as a shortcut.
