Day 1: Princes’ Islands
Take the Sehir Hatlari public ferry from Kabatas, directly opposite Dolmabahce Palace; it’s 75-100 minutes to Buyukada, roughly 130-140 TRY one-way with an Istanbulkart (verify, fares climb with inflation). Check departures on sehirhatlari.istanbul before you go. The island banned private cars outright, and since a 2020 crackdown on the horse-drawn phaetons, bicycles and electric carts do the job now. Rent one at the dock and ride the loop past the 19th-century mansions.
Day 2: A Bosphorus cruise
Skip the tour boats clustered near Eminonu unless you specifically want commentary. The Sehir Hatlari long tour runs about 6 hours up to Anadolu Kavagi near the Black Sea mouth with a 2-3 hour shore break, for around euro12-15; a shorter 2-hour circle runs about 340 TRY. The cheapest version, the standard commuter ferry to Kadikoy or Uskudar, costs a few dollars and covers most of the same skyline in 15-20 minutes.
Day 3: Edirne
Direct buses leave close to hourly, first around 05:00, last around 23:00; the fastest covers the 2h15 route in just over two hours, budget 2h45 with traffic. The payoff is the Selimiye Mosque, Mimar Sinan’s masterpiece, quieter than anything comparable back in Istanbul.
Day 4: Bursa
The ferry-plus-bus combination, an IDO or BUDO service to Mudanya followed by a 25-30 minute taxi or bus into central Bursa, takes about 1h40 on the water; a direct bus instead runs 3-5 hours. Count on 10-14 hours round trip once in-city time is added. The Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami) and the Green Tomb make the slog worth it.
Day 5: A flex day, or Heybeliada
Build in one day with nothing booked. Ferries to the Princes’ Islands and the Bosphorus tour boats both run less reliably in bad weather than operators like to admit, and a flex day absorbs a cancelled crossing without wrecking the rest of the trip. If everything ran on schedule, use it for Heybeliada, the second-largest Princes’ Island, quieter than Buyukada and reached by the same ferry line, or for firming up flight and hotel bookings if you’re extending afterward to Cappadocia or Ephesus, both of which need their own dedicated trip and cannot be squeezed into this one.
Is a flex day really necessary on a 5-day trip?
Yes, more than most itineraries admit. Both the Princes’ Islands ferry and the Bosphorus tour boats run on schedules that bend to weather, and a single storm day with nothing booked keeps a cancellation from cascading into the rest of the week. If nothing goes wrong, spend it on Heybeliada instead of an empty hotel afternoon.
