Moscow 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Two days is Red Square, the Kremlin, and one more museum, not “all of Moscow.” Every price here is RUB, not euros or dollars, and your foreign Visa or Mastercard will not work anywhere, so arrive with cash exchanged. If three days sounds more honest for your pace, our 3-day plan adds Kitay-Gorod and the Tretyakov without pretending you’ll see either properly in an afternoon squeezed onto day two.

Moscow: 8 Things Worth Doing (and 3 to Skip)
Most Moscow guides bury the trip-breaking details at the bottom. Here they are first. Every price below is in Russian rubles (RUB), not euros or dollars, at roughly 75-80 RUB per US dollar in 2026. Your foreign Visa or Mastercard will not work anywhere here, not at hotels, not at the Kremlin ticket office, so bring cash to exchange. Most Western nationalities need a visa, and the cheap e-visa does not cover US, UK, Canadian or Australian passports.

Moscow: 5 Day Trips Worth Taking (Skip 1)
Moscow’s real value as a base isn’t the city itself, that’s a separate trip, it’s the five day trips sitting within a couple of hours: Sergiev Posad’s Trinity Lavra (roughly 1h10-1.5h by suburban train), the quieter town of Zvenigorod, the Arkhangelskoye estate, and the Vladimir-Suzdal stretch of the Golden Ring. Saint Petersburg is deliberately not on that list. The Sapsan takes about 4 hours each way, and marketing it as a Moscow day trip is the single most common bad piece of advice in this corner of travel content, budget it as an overnight instead, or skip it.

Moscow: 9 Things Worth Doing
Start with the fact that decides everything else: a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express card issued outside Russia will not work anywhere in Moscow, not in a shop, not at an ATM, not on the Metro, since March 2022, with no tourist exception. Bring cash to exchange (USD, EUR, or CNY) or arrange a Russian MIR card before you land, because there is no backup plan once you’re here. Add in that most Western airlines don’t fly to Moscow (route via Istanbul, Dubai, or Yerevan instead), a visa is required for nearly everyone, and the US and UK both currently advise against all travel to Russia, check your own government’s advisory before booking anything.
