Moscow 5 Day Itinerary (Plus Day Trips)
Five days adds Vladimir, under 2 hours by express train and a legitimate day trip on its own, distinct in character from the monastery-focused Sergiev Posad stop. This builds on our 4-day version ; add a day and it becomes our 6-day itinerary , which extends Vladimir into an overnight Suzdal loop.
Book these before you go:
- A place to stay in Moscow on Ostrovok.ru : check the payment terms before relying on a foreign card
- RZD’s passenger timetable : Yaroslavsky Station for Sergiev Posad, a different long-distance platform for Vladimir
- Arkhangelskoye’s official ticket page : has shown online sales as unavailable at times, confirm before you plan around it
| Day | Focus | Distance/time from Moscow |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrival, cash, central Moscow orientation | In the city |
| 2 | Sergiev Posad day trip | Roughly 1h10-1.5h each way |
| 3 | Zvenigorod day trip | Roughly 1h each way |
| 4 | Arkhangelskoye estate day trip | Roughly 45min-1h, car or tour easier |
| 5 | Vladimir day trip | Under 2h each way by express train |
Day 1: Arrival and getting your logistics right
Land at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, or Vnukovo, Aeroexpress into the city (roughly 500-650 RUB, cash or MIR card only), exchange cash early. Western-issued cards do not work anywhere in Russia, no exceptions, since March 2022. Base yourself centrally so all four day trips stay short rides from home.
Day 2: Sergiev Posad, the essential Golden Ring day trip
Elektrichka or express trains from Yaroslavsky Station, roughly every 20-40 minutes, roughly 1h10-1.5h, fare roughly 200-320 RUB one-way, cash only. Ten minutes on foot to the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius; grounds free, separate fee for specific museum collections (verify at stsl.ru ). Dress modestly.
Day 3: Zvenigorod, the quieter second monastery town
Roughly an hour out, the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and a Museum of Russian Desserts for a lower-key half or full day. Plan the train-plus-local-transfer connection ahead of time.
Day 4: Arkhangelskoye, the estate day trip that rewards a car
This late-18th-century palace-and-park estate near Krasnogorsk has thin public transit, a car or organized tour helps. arhangelskoe.su has shown ticket sales as unavailable at times, confirm or plan to buy at the gate.
Day 5: Vladimir, the Golden Ring’s own dedicated day trip
How is Vladimir different from Sergiev Posad? It’s a full former medieval capital rather than a single monastery complex, UNESCO-listed white-stone cathedrals across an actual city center, not one pilgrimage site. Lastochka and Strizh express trains run under 2 hours each way, with 20-plus direct departures a day, among the busiest long-distance rail corridors out of Moscow, book via RZD’s passenger portal or buy at the station with cash. Treat it as a full day dedicated to Vladimir itself, this is the version of the Golden Ring trip that doesn’t try to squeeze in Suzdal too.
Before you go
Cash logistics apply on every single day trip. For Suzdal’s slower overnight version and Saint Petersburg, which five days still can’t fit, see our 6-day itinerary and up, or the Moscow, Russia guide for the full picture.
