Moscow 3 Day Itinerary (Plus Day Trips)
Three days adds a second Golden Ring town to the essential Sergiev Posad day trip: Zvenigorod, quieter and about an hour out, the right pick once you don’t want another long rail commitment. This builds on our 2-day version ; add a fourth day and it becomes our 4-day itinerary , which brings in the Arkhangelskoye estate.

Day 1: Arrival and getting your logistics right
Land at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, or Vnukovo and take the Aeroexpress into the city, roughly 500-650 RUB one-way; pay with cash or a MIR card, a foreign Visa or Mastercard won’t process at the kiosk. This decides more of the trip than any single sight: Western-issued cards do not work anywhere in Russia, no exceptions, since March 2022. Exchange cash (USD, EUR, or CNY) at a bank counter early and budget generously.
Base yourself centrally, near a metro line, so both day trips start with a short ride to the station rather than a cross-town trek first. For the city sights themselves, see our Moscow guide , this itinerary is built around what’s outside it.
Day 2: Sergiev Posad, the essential Golden Ring day trip
Elektrichka and express trains leave Yaroslavsky Station roughly every 20-40 minutes, journey time roughly 1h10 to 1.5 hours, fare roughly 200-320 RUB one-way, cash only at the kiosk. It’s a 10-minute walk from the station to the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius, Russian Orthodoxy’s most significant monastery. Grounds are free, a separate fee covers specific museum collections inside (verify at stsl.ru ); dress modestly, headscarf for women in the churches.
Day 3: Zvenigorod, the quieter second monastery town
Why add Zvenigorod after Sergiev Posad? It’s roughly an hour from central Moscow, home to the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and, oddly, a Museum of Russian Desserts, and it’s a lower-key half or full-day option once the marquee Golden Ring stop is already checked off. It’s a solid second choice, not a must-do ahead of Sergiev Posad on a first, time-limited visit.
Getting there is a train-plus-local-transfer combination rather than the direct elektrichka you used on day two, plan the connection before you leave rather than figuring it out at the station. Keep the day relaxed, this is meant as a lower-intensity follow-up to Sergiev Posad’s bigger draw, not a second marquee stop.
