Moscow 2 Day Itinerary (Plus Day Trips)
Two days is enough to land, sort your cash and logistics, and take the one Golden Ring day trip that genuinely fits: Sergiev Posad. Day 1: Arrival and getting your logistics right
Land at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, or Vnukovo and take the Aeroexpress into the city, roughly 500-650 RUB one-way depending on the airport; buy the ticket with cash or a MIR card, a foreign Visa or Mastercard won’t process at the kiosk. This single fact decides more of this trip than any sight will: Western-issued cards do not work anywhere in Russia, no exceptions, since March 2022. Exchange cash (USD, EUR, or CNY) at a bank counter as soon as you can and budget generously rather than assuming you’ll top up along the way.
Base yourself centrally, near a metro line, so tomorrow’s train station is a short ride rather than a cross-town trek. Day 2: Sergiev Posad, the essential Golden Ring day trip
Is Sergiev Posad really doable in a single day? Yes, comfortably. Elektrichka and express trains leave Yaroslavsky Station roughly every 20-40 minutes, journey time roughly 1h10 to 1.5 hours, fare roughly 200-320 RUB one-way, bought with cash at the station kiosk the morning of. It’s a 10-minute walk from the station to the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius, the most significant monastery in Russian Orthodoxy and the reason this is the Golden Ring’s marquee stop.
The monastery grounds are free; a separate fee applies to specific museum collections inside (verify the current figure at stsl.ru ). Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered, headscarf for women entering the churches, this is a working pilgrimage site first and a sightseeing stop second. Round trip train time runs roughly 2.5-3 hours against a full day out there, leaving plenty of time to walk the grounds without rushing back for a specific train.
