Moscow 4 Day Itinerary (Plus Day Trips)
Four days adds the Arkhangelskoye estate to Sergiev Posad and Zvenigorod, a genuine architecture-and-gardens day trip that rewards a car or tour more than a solo transit attempt. This builds on our 3-day version ; add a day and it becomes our 5-day itinerary , which brings in Vladimir.

Day 1: Arrival and getting your logistics right
Land at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, or Vnukovo, Aeroexpress into the city (roughly 500-650 RUB, cash or MIR card only), and exchange cash early. Western-issued Visa, Mastercard, and Amex cards do not work anywhere in Russia, a total block since March 2022, budget for the whole trip’s cash needs rather than assuming you’ll top up along the way. Day 2: Sergiev Posad, the essential Golden Ring day trip
Elektrichka or express trains from Yaroslavsky Station, roughly every 20-40 minutes, roughly 1h10-1.5h, fare roughly 200-320 RUB one-way, cash only. Walk 10 minutes to the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius; grounds free, a separate fee covers specific museum collections (verify at stsl.ru ). Dress modestly.
Day 3: Zvenigorod, the quieter second monastery town
Roughly an hour from central Moscow, the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and a Museum of Russian Desserts make for a lower-key half or full day once Sergiev Posad is already done. Plan the train-plus-local-transfer connection ahead rather than working it out at the station.
Day 4: Arkhangelskoye, the estate day trip that rewards a car
Is Arkhangelskoye worth the trip without a car? Marginally. This late-18th-century palace-and-park estate near Krasnogorsk has thin public transit, a car or an organized tour makes it materially easier than a bus-and-walk combination. The official site, arhangelskoe.su , has shown ticket sales as unavailable at times, call ahead or plan to buy at the gate. If the previous two day trips already filled your architecture-and-gardens quota, this is the one to skip first.
