Chiang Mai 2 Day Itinerary (No Traps)
Two days covers the Old City temple core and Doi Suthep, the two things you genuinely cannot skip even on a quick trip. That’s deliberately not enough time for a cooking class or a proper Nimman afternoon; add a day at a time with our 3-day through 7-day versions once you know you want more.

Day 1: Arrival and the Old City core
Land at Chiang Mai International Airport, roughly 3-6km from the Old City, a short hop rather than a real transfer; Grab runs 80-200 THB to most Old City hotels, or a shared red songthaew for less if you don’t mind waiting for it to fill. Check into a guesthouse inside the moat and drop your bags before doing anything else.
Spend the afternoon on the two temples worth the entrance fee: Wat Phra Singh first, then Wat Chedi Luang a five-minute walk east, 20-50 THB and 40 THB respectively, shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the door. In the evening, catch whichever Walking Street falls on your dates, Ratchadamnoen on Sunday or Wua Lai on Saturday, and if neither lines up, eat at a proper local khao soi shop rather than the nightly Night Bazaar; it closes by mid-afternoon most days, so lunch or early dinner, not a late one.
Do you need a car for a Chiang Mai city trip? No. The Old City is walkable end to end, and a rental car adds parking hassle and one-way moat traffic to navigate for no real time saved; songthaews, Grab, and your own feet cover everything in this itinerary.
Day 2: Doi Suthep and Nimman
Morning belongs to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep , roughly 15km up Doi Suthep-Pui National Park . Take a shared red songthaew from Chang Phuak Gate for around 40-50 THB per person, or Grab if you’d rather not wait for the truck to fill. Entry is 30 THB; climb the 306-step naga staircase for free or ride the funicular for a small extra fee. Go before 8am, both for the light and because the temple is genuinely crowded by mid-morning.
Is Doi Suthep worth doing without a guided tour? Yes. It’s a straightforward songthaew-and-entry-fee trip with no real logistical complexity, unlike a full-day trip further out of the city; save the guided tours for destinations that actually need one, and put the money toward a better lunch instead.
Spend the afternoon in Nimman, about 2km west of the Old City near Chiang Mai University: independent cafes, One Nimman and the Maya mall cluster at the Huay Kaew intersection, and a noticeably different pace from the temple-and-market side of town. Dinner in Nimman rather than heading back to the Old City closes the day out well.
Before you go
Temple dress code is non-negotiable: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off before the main hall, both days of this itinerary. Non-Thai arrivals need the Thailand Digital Arrival Card , a free online form submitted within 72 hours of arrival, and Thailand’s visa-exemption length is mid-change as of 2026, so check the current rules for your nationality before you book instead of trusting a fixed day count. Carry small THB notes; songthaew and tuk-tuk drivers rarely break a 1,000 baht note.
