Walking Tours in Laos
Travel advisory, October 2026: The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Xaisomboun Province. Unexploded ordnance remains in rural areas, so walk only on marked paths, use local guides for countryside hikes and never touch metal objects. Methanol poisoning has occurred in bars, so choose sealed drinks after your walk. Rivers have caused drownings. Check FCDO and travel.state.gov before you travel.
The best walking in Laos is urban. Luang Prabang’s peninsula and Vientiane’s riverside centre are flat enough to cover on foot, and the countryside needs a local guide. Carry kip (LAK) for tickets, at about 22,000 to 22,500 per US dollar.
Luang Prabang peninsula
The peninsula is flat and compact. A good loop starts at the Royal Palace on Sisavangvong Road, passes Wat Mai, follows Sakkaline Road to Wat Xieng Thong, and returns along the Nam Khan. In hot months start before 10:00 or after 15:30. There is no Grab in Laos, so agree a tuk-tuk fare before getting in if your feet give out.
Mount Phousi traverse
Climb 328 steps from Sisavangvong Road and descend 355 steps on the Nam Khan side. The foreigner ticket is 30,000 LAK until 14 November 2026 and 60,000 LAK from 15 November, per the tourism office . The hill is open from about 06:00 to 18:00, and the top is crowded at sunset.
Nam Khan bamboo bridges
Local builders put up bamboo bridges across the Nam Khan each dry season, from November to May, and the bridges are gone in the wet months. Tolls run around 10,000 to 15,000 LAK per crossing.
Alms giving observation walk
The morning alms procession in Luang Prabang is a living Buddhist practice. It begins around 05:30 to 06:00, depending on the season. Watch quietly from across the street, without flash, and do not step into the line or touch a monk or a bowl. Dress with shoulders and knees covered. Do not buy food from sellers along the route to hand over for photographs. If you want to give, bring fresh rice from the morning market and do so out of genuine devotion.
Vientiane colonial and monument walk
This walk of about 3 km takes 2.5 to 3 hours. Start at the Nam Phou fountain and pass the Presidential Palace, then Wat Si Saket and Haw Phra Kaew. Continue up Lane Xang Avenue to Patuxai. The fee to climb the monument varies between sources, from about 3,000 to 30,000 LAK, so check at the door. Walk in the morning, because the heat builds fast.
Vang Vieng and Tham Chang
Tham Chang cave is about 1.5 km south of town across the river via a footbridge. Expect a small cave fee plus a bridge toll of about 15,000 and 5,000 LAK.
Plain of Jars Site 1
After the visitor centre, take a short buggy ride or walk to the cleared walkway. Stay on the white side of the markers, because red marks the boundary of ground that has not been cleared of ordnance.
Walking tips
