Day Trips in Laos
Travel advisory, October 2026: The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Xaisomboun Province. Unexploded ordnance remains in rural Laos, so keep to marked paths and main routes and never touch metal objects. Methanol has poisoned tourists in bars, so avoid free shots and unbranded spirits. Rivers and waterfalls have caused drownings. Route 7 to Phonsavan carries a US caution, so avoid driving it after dark. Check FCDO and travel.state.gov before travelling.
Good day trips in Laos start from one of four bases: Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng or Pakse. Distances look short on a map, but roads are slow, so keep each outing to one main stop. Kip (LAK) is the currency, at about 22,000 to 22,500 per US dollar.
From Vientiane
Vang Vieng by train. The Laos-China Railway covers Vientiane to Vang Vieng in about 52 minutes each way. A second-class seat costs about 171,000 LAK, and the exact fare varies by train. This works as a long day for the town, Tham Chang cave, tubing or kayaking. The Blue Lagoons are 11 to 16 km out of town, and getting to and from the stations adds time, so check the last train back before you commit. Tickets sell out, and the LCR Ticket app shows live fares.
Buddha Park (Wat Xieng Khuan). The park lies about 24 to 25 km southeast of the city on the road to the Friendship Bridge. City bus 14 leaves from the Talat Sao bus station, with fares reported at 6,000 to 10,000 LAK. Some buses stop at the bridge, so confirm it goes to the park. Reported entry fees range from 15,000 to 60,000 LAK, and the park closes between 16:00 and 17:00. Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat created it in 1958. Shade is scarce, so go early.
From Luang Prabang
Kuang Si Falls. The drive takes 40 to 45 minutes. Go in the morning to arrive ahead of the tour buses, and combine the falls with the bear rescue centre inside the same area. The foreigner ticket is 60,000 LAK now and 100,000 LAK from 15 November 2026. See the tourism office page .
Pak Ou Caves by river. The boat takes about 1.5 hours upstream, and most trips stop for lunch in Ban Xang Hai or Pak Ou. Tickets for the caves are 30,000 LAK now and 60,000 LAK from 15 November 2026, with the boat fare charged separately. Details are on the Pak Ou page .
From Pakse
Vat Phou. The Khmer-era temple complex is about 45 km from Pakse. Allow a full day with a guide or a rented motorbike, because no public transport runs all the way. Day tours cost about 450,000 to 500,000 LAK.
Bolaven Plateau. Waterfalls such as Tad Fane, Tad Yuang and Tad Champi, plus coffee farms around Paksong, fill a full day by motorbike, taxi or tour. Entry runs roughly 20,000 to 50,000 LAK per waterfall. Anthrax in livestock has been reported near Pakse and the plateau, so do not touch animals and eat only well-cooked meat.
Trips that need more than a day
Si Phan Don lies about 720 km from Vientiane. Fly to Pakse first, then allow 2.5 to 3 hours by road to Nakasang and a boat after that. The Plain of Jars is a long way from both Luang Prabang and Vientiane, so fly to Xieng Khouang or allow 7 to 11 hours on a mountain road. Kuang Si is likewise too far from Vientiane for a day.
