Romantic Getaways in Laos
Travel advisory, October 2026: The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Xaisomboun Province. Unexploded ordnance remains in rural Laos, so stay on marked paths. Methanol poisoning has occurred in bars, including licensed ones in tourist areas, so choose sealed bottles and avoid free shots. Rivers have caused drownings, and the Mekong is not for swimming. Check FCDO and travel.state.gov before you go.
Laos has no sea coast and no resort strip, and the options for couples are modest and few. What the country offers instead is slow evenings on the water, candlelit Lao dining and quiet towns where nothing starts early. Luang Prabang is the best base for a romantic stay, with Champasak as a calmer alternative. Prices are in kip (LAK), at about 22,000 to 22,500 per US dollar.
Dinners in Luang Prabang
Tamarind. This Lao restaurant on the Nam Khan serves tasting dinners and is closed on Sundays. Book ahead, and see the Tamarind website for hours.
Manda de Laos. Diners sit in pavilions around three lotus ponds. Expect fine-dining prices, and reserve in advance.
Dyen Sabai. This riverside Lao barbecue lies across the Nam Khan, reached by a seasonal bamboo bridge or by boat. Booking sites list it as open from 10:00 to 23:30, but confirm before you cross. The bamboo bridges are built each dry season, from November to May.
On the river
A Mekong sunset cruise from Luang Prabang costs from about USD 18 without dinner up to USD 45 and above with dinner and music. Prices vary between operators, so compare a few and check what is included. Stay seated on board, and do not swim in the Mekong.
Above the valley
Sunrise balloon flights run over the Nathong Valley at Vang Vieng from mid-September to May. Authorities paused flights from late February to mid-March 2026, and a balloon hit power lines on 26 March 2026 with no injuries reported. The Prime Minister ordered new rules on 7 April. Check whether flights are operating before you plan around one, and ask the operator about its current safety rules. Prices are reported at about USD 120 to 150 per adult.
A slower route south
Champasak sits on the Mekong near Vat Phou, the Khmer-era temple complex and a UNESCO site. Riverside guesthouses and the ruins in soft low-season light make a calm change from the busier north. Fly to Pakse and continue by road.
What to skip
Tubing bar crawls are not a romantic activity, and drinks served there carry the methanol risk noted above. No snorkelling, diving, jet-skiing or parasailing is available in Laos, so do not plan a beach-style trip.
Practical tips
- November to February is the cool, dry season and the most comfortable for evenings outdoors.
- March and April bring smoke and heat in the north.
- Manda de Laos advises reservations, so book before you arrive.
