Multi-Day Trips in Laos
Travel advisory, October 2026: The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Xaisomboun Province. Unexploded ordnance remains in rural Laos, so stay on main routes and marked paths and never touch metal objects. Methanol poisoning has occurred in bars, so drink only sealed drinks. Mekong boats, rafting, kayaking and swimming have caused deaths, and the Foreign Office calls speedboats dangerous. Check FCDO and travel.state.gov before booking.
Multi-day trips in Laos follow three corridors: the northern rail line, the Mekong by slow boat, and the far south. Roads are slow and flights are short, so plan fewer stops than you think you need. Costs are in kip (LAK), at about 22,000 to 22,500 per US dollar.
The northern rail route, 4 to 6 days
The Laos-China Railway links Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. Vientiane to Vang Vieng takes about 52 to 55 minutes, Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang about 50 minutes, and Vientiane to Luang Prabang about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours on the fast C-trains. A slower train takes about 2 hours 50 minutes. Second class costs around 330,000 to 360,000 LAK (about USD 15 to 17) between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, and the LCR Ticket app shows live fares. Tickets usually go on sale a week or less before travel and sell out, so buy early.
Bring your passport, because it is checked at the station. Stations are well outside the centres in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, so budget at least 90,000 LAK for transfers on top of the ticket. Security checks are like an airport, and vapes are illegal. If time allows, add Phonsavan and the Plain of Jars by air.
Slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang
The public slow boat takes two days with a night in Pakbeng. A public ticket costs about USD 30 to 40. Choose the slow boat over narrow speedboats, which the UK Foreign Office warns carry real risks.
Gibbon Experience, Bokeo
Based in Huay Xai, this programme combines ziplines through the canopy with nights in treehouses. The official site lists the Giant and Escape packages (2 days each), the Classic (3 days) and the Honeymoon (3 days, private treehouse). Prices are not published online, so book ahead and ask what is included. Sightings of gibbons cannot be promised. The Bokeo Golden Triangle special economic zone is a separate area that carries a US caution.
Southern Laos, 4 to 5 days
Pakse has flights from both Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Spend a day on the Bolaven Plateau for waterfalls and coffee, then continue to Champasak and Vat Phou. From Pakse, Nakasang is about 2.5 to 3 hours by road, with a minivan costing about USD 8. Bus and boat combinations on to Don Det or Don Khon cost about USD 9 to 18. On the islands, cycle across the old French railway bridge and watch the Li Phi rapids. Khone Phapheng Falls charge about 55,000 LAK, though you should confirm at the gate. Si Phan Don is for cycling and river life, and no dolphin trips run on the Lao side.
Thakhek Loop, Khammouane
The loop is about 450 km and takes three to five days by motorbike, ending at Kong Lor Cave. Accidents are common and fuel stops can be far apart. Wear a helmet, carry insurance that covers motorbike accidents, ride only in daylight, and never leave your passport as a rental deposit.
Plain of Jars and Phonsavan, 2 nights
Fly in. Route 7 by road is long and carries a US caution. At the sites, stay on the cleared paths.
