Romantic Taiwan: Hot Springs and Lake Views
Warm water first
Taiwan’s romance is small and sensory: steam rising off a bath, tea on a hillside, a lake at dusk and a lantern drifting up. The best trips are built from a handful of good evenings. They run below in the order of the day they suit.
Morning: a soak for two
Beitou and Wulai are the hot spring districts closest to Taipei. Both have private bathhouse rooms with a cedar or stone tub that you book by the hour, usually for 60 to 90 minutes at roughly NT$500 to NT$900, though prices vary by venue and day, so confirm when you reserve. For a lighter start, the public Millennium Hot Spring in Beitou charges NT$40 to NT$60 for its outdoor mineral pools (swimwear required), and the free foot baths at Fuxing Park suit a slow walk afterwards.
Afternoon: tea in the hills
Ride the Maokong Gondola from beside Taipei Zoo up to the tea plantations and choose a glass-bottomed Crystal Cabin for the views. Check the operator for current fares. Hill-top tea houses serve gongfu-style high-mountain oolong, and a tasting session runs roughly NT$800 to NT$1,800 per person for a guided ritual with premium teas. Stay for the light to turn gold.
Sunset: the water’s edge
In Tamsui, a short ferry crosses from Tamsui Old Street to Fisherman’s Wharf for NT$34 to NT$40 one way, and the river mouth faces the sunset. Alternatively, cycle the riverside paths on a rented YouBike and watch the sun drop into the Taiwan Strait.
Evening: above the city
Taipei 101’s observatory is tiered. The standard ticket starts at NT$600 for the 88th, 89th and 91st floors, and higher tiers cost more. The entrance is in the office tower. Book a time close to sunset, and see the Taipei 101 site for the tiers.
A day out of the city: Sun Moon Lake
The lake’s boat hops cost about NT$100 per pier and a full round trip is around NT$300. Staying lakeside lets you see it at dawn after the day-trippers have gone, and you can cycle a quiet stretch of the 30 km bikeway. To compare stays, check Sun Moon Lake hotel rates on Booking.com .
Wishes on paper
At Shifen, couples paint a wish on a paper lantern and release it beside the railway tracks. A single-colour lantern costs about NT$200 and a multicolour one NT$250 to NT$350, with free entry. In Taipei, the Xiahai City God Temple has free entry and a matchmaker deity, where visitors come to pray for love. You can also browse Pingxi lantern experiences on GetYourGuide .
Practical points
The Taipei MRT fines eating and drinking, water included, by NT$1,500 to NT$7,500. Typhoon season runs July to October, so keep the lantern and lake days flexible, and check the Central Weather Administration . For wider planning, see the Taiwan tourism board .
Dinner for two
For a sit-down dinner, Din Tai Fung serves pork xiao long bao, truffle dumplings and egg fried rice for about NT$450 to NT$750 per person at its original Xinyi branch or the Taipei 101 branch. The cheaper and livelier alternative is a night market such as Raohe, where a pepper pork bun from the clay oven is NT$60 to NT$70. For another route, see the 2-day itinerary .
Verdict: the private bath plus Maokong sunset is the most reliable romantic day in the country. Tip: book the hot spring room for late afternoon, then dine in a night market rather than a restaurant, for the atmosphere.
