Walking Routes in Shymkent
Before You Set Out
Shymkent is spread out, and some blocks are about four times larger than they look on a map. Pick one route per outing and use a taxi between areas. In July and August, walk in the morning or after about 18:00, wear a hat and carry water.
Route 1: Ordabasy Square to the Old Town
Start at Ordabasy Square and look at the Zher-Ana stele. Walk through the Upper Bazaar next door for spices, dried fruit and bread. Cross the pedestrian bridge into Independence Park, which was created in 2011, then continue towards the old town and the Shymqala complex. The park lies between the square and the old town. Allow two to three hours more if you enter Shymqala.
Route 2: Arbat and the Tulip Fountain
The Arbat is a pedestrian street on Beibitshilik Avenue with street artists, souvenir stalls and cafes, and it is lit up at night. The Tulip Fountain stands at the corner of Tauke Khan Avenue and Momysh-Uly. This route is short, flat and works well after dinner.
Route 3: City Parks
Central Park, founded in 1886, and Ken Baba park, from 1908, are close enough for one afternoon. Abay Park has the Memorial of Glory and the fine arts museum in its northern part. Victory Park holds the Erlik museum. Benches and shade are easy to find, which helps in summer.
Route 4: Old Mosques and the Spring
Koshkar-Ata Mosque, built between 1850 and 1856, stands in the old city, and the Jami Mosque is the oldest in Shymkent. The Koshkar-Ata spring gives free drinking water. Dress modestly and take shoes off when asked.
Route 5: Soviet Mosaics
Look for mosaics at Kazybek Bi 40 (School No. 9), Zhangeldin 17, and Kabanbay Batyr 12, and a mural block at Zharkymbekova 16a. These are free and fit a taxi-and-walk afternoon.
A Quiet Stop
The Museum of Victims of Political Repression at Ryskulbekov Street 14A and the nearby Kasiret memorial are best visited separately from the other routes. Keep the tone respectful.
Getting Around
City buses cost about 100 KZT, and Yandex Go and inDrive cover taxis. The old town bus stops include the Magnum stop on Volodarsky Street, about 500 m from the complex. Keep valuables in front pockets in crowds.
