Shymkent Sights and Landmarks
The Central Squares
Ordabasy Square is the city’s main plaza. The Zher-Ana (Mother Earth) stele stands here, and the Upper Bazaar lies beside it. The square is tied to the 1726 gathering of Kazakh tribal leaders. A pedestrian bridge links it to Independence Park, which was created in 2011 and holds the Shanyrak monument and a tall flagpole. The park lies between the square and the old town.
Baidibek Bi Monument and Kazyna
The Baidibek Bi monument stands in the Kazyna ethno-historical complex on a high point in northern Shymkent. It is about 23 m tall including the pedestal, with a figure about 10 m high, and was unveiled in autumn 2012. Kazyna also has models of regional mausolea and a miniature alley. Sunset is the best time for views.
Mosques
The Koshkar-Ata Mosque was built between 1850 and 1856 and is one of the few surviving 19th century buildings in the old city. The Jami Mosque is the oldest in the city. The Central Mosque, Ak Meshit, dates from 2013, and the Seitzhan Kari Eszhanuly Mosque in Nursat opened in 2024 as the largest in the city. Cover shoulders and knees, and ask before entering during prayers.
Museums
The Turkistan Region museum of local lore is at Baidibek Bi Avenue 115a, and the Art Museum is at Madeli Kozha 2B. Wikivoyage lists both as open 09:00 to 18:00, so confirm before going. The Retro Garage shows classic cars, and Kyluet is an underground ethnomuseum, so call ahead for hours. The Shymqala old town complex has the Citadel hall, Forge and catacomb exhibitions and an observation deck. Foreign adults pay about 1,000 KZT and residents about 500 KZT. Some areas of the complex are worn or closed, so ask at the desk.
Memorial Sites
The Museum of Victims of Political Repression at Ryskulbekov Street 14A opened in 2001, and foreign adults have been charged about 1,000 KZT. The Kasiret memorial nearby marks an execution site of the 1930s. Memorial events take place there on 31 May. Visit in a quiet, respectful way.
Soviet Mosaics and Street Art
Mosaics survive at Kazybek Bi 40, Zhangeldin 17 and Kabanbay Batyr 12, and a mural block stands at Zharkymbekova 16a. All are free to view.
Beyond the City Limits
Sayram, now in eastern Shymkent, has the Ibrahim Ata and Karashash Ana mausolea. Turkistan, with its UNESCO-listed Yasawi Mausoleum, is a day trip of about 160 km. Both are pilgrimage places with modest dress expected.
