Choosing a Tour Most organised visits from Shymkent fall into four groups: the Sayram shrines inside the city, a long day to Turkistan with Otrar and Arystan Bab, an evening city bus ride, and a guided day in the Aksu-Zhabagly reserve. Read what an operator includes before you book, because entrance fees at the sites are often extra. Planning Around Shymkent Shymkent is a practical base for a few days in southern Kazakhstan. The city has an airport about 12 km north-west of the centre, a rail junction and good road links to Turkistan, Otrar and the mountains. The three and five day plans below use verified distances and leave room for slow summer afternoons. Three Days: Old Town and the Silk Road Day 1 stays in the city.

What Is Verified for Couples Shymkent offers a short list of pleasant couple experiences rather than a resort scene. They are hotel stays, dinners, evening walks and city views. The pieces below are confirmed places, so plan around them and do not expect boat trips, beaches or large lakes. Where to Stay Rixos Khadisha Shymkent is a 5-star hotel at Zheltoksan Street 17 with 177 rooms. It has Italian and pan-Asian restaurants, a Turkish bath, an indoor pool and a children’s pool, so couples can book a quiet spa evening.

The Central Squares Ordabasy Square is the city’s main plaza. The Zher-Ana (Mother Earth) stele stands here, and the Upper Bazaar lies beside it. The square is tied to the 1726 gathering of Kazakh tribal leaders. A pedestrian bridge links it to Independence Park, which was created in 2011 and holds the Shanyrak monument and a tall flagpole. The park lies between the square and the old town. Baidibek Bi Monument and Kazyna The Baidibek Bi monument stands in the Kazyna ethno-historical complex on a high point in northern Shymkent.

The Old Town and the Bazaar Shymkent is Kazakhstan’s third-largest city and a good base for southern Kazakhstan. Start at Shymqala, the open-air museum on the old settlement mound. Local archaeologists date settlement here back about 2,200 years, and excavations reached about 14 m deep, turning up ceramics from the late 3rd and early 2nd century BC. The complex has a Citadel hall, a Forge hall, a catacomb exhibition, an observation deck and restored quarters.

Before You Set Out Shymkent is spread out, and some blocks are about four times larger than they look on a map. Pick one route per outing and use a taxi between areas. In July and August, walk in the morning or after about 18:00, wear a hat and carry water. Route 1: Ordabasy Square to the Old Town Start at Ordabasy Square and look at the Zher-Ana stele. Walk through the Upper Bazaar next door for spices, dried fruit and bread.
