Romantic Escapes in Trinidad and Tobago
As of October 2026, the US State Department advises reconsidering travel to Trinidad and Tobago because of crime. The UK FCDO says violent crime is high and asks for particular caution in downtown Port of Spain, Carenage, Sea Lots, Belmont, Laventille, Morvant, Beetham, Barataria, Cocorite and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah. Visit the city centre by day, use registered taxis, do not walk alone at night, and check FCDO advice and travel.state.gov before you book.
Romantic escapes in Trinidad and Tobago
Trinidad and Tobago suits couples who want quiet beaches, birds and slow days more than a polished resort programme. The romantic options are few and low-key, mostly on Tobago, and they work best as unhurried daytime plans. Costs are in Trinidad and Tobago dollars (TT$), about TT$6.8 to US$1.
Castara and Englishman’s Bay (Tobago)
Castara is a fishing village on Tobago’s leeward coast with hillside cottages, and Castara Retreats is listed on the major booking sites. Morning seine-net pulls on the beach and the Thursday-night bonfire are the village’s set pieces. Englishman’s Bay nearby is calm and undeveloped. Book cottages ahead.
Tea at Asa Wright (Trinidad)
The Asa Wright Nature Centre day pass is TT$550 per adult and includes lunch, afternoon tea on the verandah and a guided Discovery Trail walk of about 45 minutes, with the centre open from 09:00 to 17:00. Couples who want longer can stay overnight in the 29-room lodge. Book through hadcoexperiences.com .
Pigeon Point at sunset (Tobago)
Pigeon Point Heritage Park charges TT$20 for an adult (about US$3). A beach walk out to the thatched jetty is the classic way to spend the end of the day. The water is reef-sheltered and calm. There are no party boats here, and jet skis are restricted in the park.
A daytime reef charter (Tobago)
A private boat to Buccoo Reef works as a half-day for two, with tours allowed only from 10:00 to 17:30. Because the park closes to boats in the late afternoon, an evening sail over the reef is not possible, and alcohol is banned inside the park, so save the drinks for dinner on shore. Use an operator whose boat is registered and insured, and expect to buy tickets at the authorised reef-operator booths.
A cocoa tasting (Tobago)
Tobago Cocoa Estate in Roxborough offers a tour of about 60 to 75 minutes that includes fresh cocoa, cocoa tea and a rum and chocolate sample. It runs on published dates, mainly from November to April, so check tobagococoa.com and email at least 72 hours ahead. An adult ticket is TT$150 (US$25) in cash.
Safety for couples
Drug-assisted robbery has been reported in Trinidad and Tobago, including through dating apps, so be careful about accepting drinks from people you have only just met online. Avoid isolated, poorly lit places and deserted beaches, and do not resist a robbery. On the north coast of Trinidad, beaches such as Maracas have rip currents, so swim only where lifeguards are posted.
