The Great Walks system
Bookings open annually in May or July on DOC’s booking portal , and popular walks sell out within 15-45 minutes. International hut fees run well above the New Zealand resident rate, and DOC has raised them materially between seasons before, so treat the figures below as this season’s snapshot rather than a fixed number.
- Milford Track (Fiordland): 53.5 km over 4 days/3 nights, strictly one-way from Glade Wharf to Sandfly Point, capped at 40 independent walkers a day. International hut fee: $152 NZD per night, plus boat transfers at both ends running $150-$180 NZD.
- Routeburn Track (Mount Aspiring/Fiordland): 32 km over 3 days/2 nights, Routeburn Shelter to The Divide via Harris Saddle and Key Summit. International hut fee: $132 NZD per night.
- Kepler Track (Fiordland): a 60 km circular loop from Lake Te Anau past Luxmore Hut’s ridgeline. International hut fee: $132 NZD per night.
- Abel Tasman Coast Track (Nelson/Tasman): 60 km over 3-5 days along golden beaches, with a tidal crossing at Awaroa that requires low tide. International hut fee: $84 NZD per night, campsites $31 NZD per night.

The TranzAlpine crosses the Southern Alps from Christchurch to Greymouth in about 4.5 hours each way via Arthur’s Pass and the Otira Tunnel, Scenic Class $179-$279 NZD one-way. Pair it with a few nights on the West Coast for Punakaiki’s Pancake Rocks and Franz Josef Glacier heli-hikes.
A road-trip alternative: Central Otago and the Lakes
Queenstown is the base for exploring Arrowtown’s gold-mining history, Bannockburn’s wine region, and the Routeburn Track trailhead, all within a couple of hours’ drive; add Wanaka and Lake Hawea for a week that mixes tramping with wine and lake towns without needing a single hut booking.
