Uruguay with Kids: Parks, Animals, Beaches
Start with an amusement park and a fauna reserve
Children in Uruguay get two good anchors, one in the capital and one by the sea. In Montevideo, the amusement park in Parque Rodó was renovated in 2026, with a drop tower and other new rides that opened in January; check ride lists and rates on the park’s own website before you go. Near Piriápolis, the fauna breeding station at the foot of Cerro Pan de Azúcar keeps about 250 animals of 53 native species on 86 hectares. Entry is free, summer hours run from 08:00 to 19:00, and trails and a playground make it an easy half-day. Closures are possible in heat waves.
Free parks and calm beaches
Parque Villa Dolores in Montevideo, at Av. Rivera 3245, is a free green space open Wednesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:30. Bring a picnic and a ball. Pocitos and Ramírez are two city beaches that locals use for relaxed swims in summer, and the Rambla beside them is flat enough for strollers and small bikes.
Sea life and a castle-like house
Museo del Mar in La Barra, near Punta del Este, has four halls of whale skeletons and thousands of seashells, and it is reported to open through the year, so confirm hours before the drive. Casapueblo at Punta Ballena looks like a white fairytale village on a cliff. Children under 12 enter free, adults pay UYU 600, and the site is open daily until sunset. See Casapueblo’s website .
History for older kids
Santa Teresa fortress in Rocha is a stone fort begun in 1762, set in a free national park with beaches and forest. The fortress charges UYU 50 and under-12s walk in free. The park is open Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00 to 18:00.
Cabo Polonio with children
The sea lions below the 1881 lighthouse make Cabo Polonio exciting for children, but the logistics are rugged. Visitors leave the car at the Ruta 10 terminal, where parking is UYU 350 a day, and ride open 4x4 trucks across the dunes for UYU 470 round trip. Children under 5 ride free. There is no mains electricity in the village, and tents and pets are not allowed. Check the official schedule .
Where to stay
A base in Montevideo puts Parque Rodó, Villa Dolores and the city beaches within a short ride of each other. You can search family hotels on Booking.com and compare cancellation terms. Non-residents pay no VAT on hotel stays when they show foreign ID, and restaurants cut VAT from 22% to about 13% on card payments through April 2027.
Seasons and tips
Summer, December to February, is the beach season, and prices rise along the coast. In winter, coastal restaurants and inns often close, so Montevideo is the easier family base. Bring sunscreen and a windproof layer whatever the month, since the Atlantic breeze is strong.
Tip: if you are planning a full route with children, read the multi-day trips page and cap every day at one major stop.
