Uruguay Day Trips by Bus, Ferry and Car
Pick the bus, the ferry or the car
Uruguay is small enough that three of its best day trips start from Montevideo, yet the coast beyond is far enough that transport decides everything. Intercity coaches leave from Terminal Tres Cruces, run by operators such as COT, Turil, COPSA and Rutas del Sol, and tickets can be bought through Urubus . Passenger rail is limited to the Tacuarembó to Rivera line on some days, so nothing by train reaches Colonia or the beaches.
Colonia del Sacramento
Colonia is the classic excursion, about 2h45 by coach from Montevideo and listed by UNESCO in 1995. Walk the cobbled lanes of the Barrio Histórico, pass through the Portón de Campo with its drawbridge, stroll Calle de los Suspiros and watch the sun go down from the old wooden pier. The Faro de Colonia lighthouse charges a small entry fee for its river views. From Buenos Aires, Colonia Express crosses in about an hour from Dársena Sur, and Buquebus and Seacat take about 1h15 from Puerto Madero, so a day trip across the river works too. Fares depend on class and date, so look at Colonia Express and Buquebus and bring your passport.
Punta del Este and Punta Ballena
The resort is roughly two hours east by coach. Combine La Mano, the giant fingers rising from the sand at Playa Brava, with the port, where sea lions wait for scraps from the fishing boats, and the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula. Casapueblo at Punta Ballena opens daily until sunset and costs UYU 600. If you want a guide, you can compare Punta del Este day tours on Viator .
Canelones wine country
Wineries sit about 45 minutes north of the capital. Bodega Bouza and Establecimiento Juanicó are separate estates, so choose one for a relaxed lunch rather than racing between them. Car hire is the easiest way to reach them, and the card-payment restaurant VAT cut from 22% to about 13% lasts until April 2027.
Driving notes
Highway tolls are cashless. Foreign-plated cars can use the Pase Turista, which reads the plate and lets you pay afterwards, as explained at telepeaje.com.uy . Rental cars with Uruguayan plates are a different case, so ask the agency how tolls are billed.
A longer reach: Cabo Polonio
Treat Cabo Polonio as an overnight rather than a day trip from Montevideo. No private car or standard bus enters the park, and visitors take a 4x4 truck from the Ruta 10 terminal for UYU 470 round trip. The Rocha tourism page lists times.
Verdict
Colonia is the best single day trip, and Canelones is the easiest if you hire a car. For longer plans, try the Uruguay 2-day itinerary . Buy return coach tickets before you leave in summer, when the Punta del Este services fill.
