Montevideo: Where to Stay by Area

Since Montevideo is a 2 to 3 day city with no metro, where you sleep decides how much you walk. Pick a barrio near the Rambla or Ciudad Vieja and you’ll rarely need a car.
Ciudad Vieja
The old town puts you inside the sightseeing: Plaza Matriz, the Cathedral, Mercado del Puerto, and Teatro Solís are all walkable. It’s also where the FCDO flags more street crime at night and on weekends, mostly bag-snatching near the port, so this suits travelers who want to be in the middle of things and don’t mind a taxi home after dark rather than walking. Hostels and budget guesthouses cluster here.
Centro
Downtown along Avenida 18 de Julio bridges Ciudad Vieja and the newer city, with more mid-range hotel stock and easy bus access to everywhere else. It’s the practical, unglamorous choice if you want a central base without paying Pocitos beachfront prices.
Pocitos
The fashionable coastal barrio, right on the Rambla with the curved city beach out front. Restaurants, cafes, and a livelier evening scene than Ciudad Vieja, plus easy access along the promenade toward Punta Carretas. This is the closest thing Montevideo has to a resort neighborhood, minus the resort prices.
Punta Carretas
Upscale and quiet, built around the 1876 lighthouse and the shopping mall converted from the old city prison. A good middle ground between Ciudad Vieja’s density and Carrasco’s distance, with easy Rambla access in both directions.
Carrasco
Leafy and residential, close to Carrasco International Airport, useful if you have an early flight or prefer quiet streets over nightlife. The Belle Époque Hotel Casino Carrasco anchors the neighborhood, and the beach here is calmer than Pocitos.
