Montevideo: Day Trips Worth Taking

Montevideo is honestly a 2 to 3 day city on its own. Day trips are what turn a long weekend into a full week, and the pecking order below is deliberate: do Colonia first if you only have time for one.
Colonia del Sacramento (the one to prioritize)
The UNESCO-listed old town, founded by the Portuguese in 1680, sits 2 to 2.5 hours from Montevideo by road and is genuinely walkable in 6-8 hours. Cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and a lighthouse make it the single best day trip from the capital, and it doubles as the classic connector if you’re also planning a Buenos Aires ferry crossing, since Buquebus runs Colonia-Buenos Aires in about 1h15. An overnight is nicer if you have the time, but a genuine day trip works fine.
Punta del Este
Uruguay’s glossy beach resort, about 2 to 2.5 hours east. La Mano, the giant sand-hand sculpture, and Casapueblo, the whitewashed cliffside gallery-house at Punta Ballena built by artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, are the two stops that make the trip. In summer (December to March), this works better as an overnight than a rushed day trip; in shoulder season, a long day trip is genuinely fine.
Piriápolis
An old-school Belle Époque resort town about an hour away, quieter and less polished than Punta del Este, good if you want a beach day without the crowds.
Canelones wine country
About 40 minutes out, and home to Uruguay’s Tannat, the country’s signature grape, not Malbec. Bodega Bouza is the pioneer winery here and worth booking ahead rather than showing up. Carmelo, farther out, pairs well with a Colonia day if you’re extending into a two-stop trip.
Atlántida and the Costa de Oro
About 40 minutes away, an easy beach half-day if you don’t want to commit to a full day trip but still want sand and open water outside the city.
