Kaikoura Walks: Peninsula and Mt Fyffe
Walking in Kaikōura
Kaikōura’s walks are self-guided DOC tracks, and the best known runs around the coastal peninsula. Bring a map and check tide times. All the DOC tracks below are free.
Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway
This is the main walk. DOC puts the loop at about 11.7 km from its sections and advises at least 3 hours.
| Section | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Town centre to Point Kean car park | 4.4 km | about 50 minutes |
| Car park to Point Kean viewpoint | 200 m | about 5 minutes |
| Point Kean to Whalers Bay viewpoint | 1.5 km | about 25 minutes |
| Whalers Bay to South Bay viewpoint | 1.1 km | about 20 minutes |
Tide and edges matter here. High tide can block the shoreline, so check tide times before you start. Do not use the Whalers Bay shoreline for the return, and keep back from the unfenced cliff edges. Dogs are allowed on only three sections and must stay away from seals. Stay at least 20 m from any seal and keep children close. See the DOC walkway page .
Mt Fyffe track and hut
The car park is about 15 km from town via Ludstone, Swamp and Postman’s Roads, and no vehicles may go beyond it. The track is shared with mountain bikes. DOC lists Mt Fyffe Hut at about 5 hours return (14 km return on the same track). The summit is 1,602 m by a very steep south-west ridge. A lookout near the firepond is about 1 hour above the car park, and is a good shorter goal. Carry a windbreaker even for the lookout.
Severe weather has damaged roads in the region, including in July 2026. Before driving to the car park, check NZTA Journeys, the Kaikōura District Council and the DOC page for current conditions. See the DOC Mt Fyffe track page .
Hinau Track
From the same car park, the Hinau Track is a loop of about 45 minutes through large hīnau trees. It crosses an unbridged stream and suits families with children who can walk that distance. See the DOC Hinau Track page . DOC also lists the Mt Fyffe Forest Walk in the same area.
Kaikōura Coast Track
The Kaikōura Coast Track is a private farm walk through Hurunui, run by an operator at 356 Conway Flat Road, Cheviot. It takes two or three days, with luggage transport and listed prices of about $230 for adults and $180 for children. Confirm the itinerary and price directly with the operator.
