Tanzania Romantic Getaways: Bush and Beach
Travel advisory: The US currently advises travellers to reconsider travel to Tanzania, and the UK advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Mozambique (Cabo Delgado) border. The lodges and beaches covered below are far from that area. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before booking.
Two days of Tanzania romance sum up the country: a dawn balloon over the Serengeti plains, then a sandbank walk at low tide on Zanzibar. Build a honeymoon around those two stops, bush first and beach second.
The bush stop
Sunrise balloon flight. A shared Serengeti flight was listed at USD 599 per person in 2026. It lasts about an hour, drifts above the herds and finishes with a champagne breakfast in the bush. Park fees are not included. Flights depart from Central Serengeti all year, from the Western and Northern areas between June and October, and from Ndutu between 20 December and 31 March. Book ahead through a lodge, or directly with Serengeti Balloon Safaris .
Private camps and tented lodges. The most secluded bush camps are reached by air. At the top end, prices start from about USD 1,000 per night, and camps inside the park add a separate concession fee. Scheduled flights are cheaper than a charter, and carriers include Coastal Aviation and Auric Air .
The drive from Arusha to Seronera takes about 8 to 9 hours, so a fly-in saves a day that is better spent in the park.
The beach stop
- North coast (Nungwi and Kendwa): powdery white sand that stays swimmable as the tide moves, with sunset dhow cruises.
- South-east (Paje and Jambiani): shallow lagoons at low tide, ideal for long walks along the sandbars.
- Mnemba reef: snorkel and dolphin trips run from the north coast. Reef fees of about USD 20 per person are reported on top of the tour price.
- Dinner for two: a seafood meal at The Rock restaurant, set on a coral outcrop that sits in the water at high tide, is reported at USD 70 to 140 for two.
Etiquette and discretion
Zanzibar is a conservative Muslim society. Cover shoulders and knees in towns and villages and keep swimwear for the beach or resort. Public displays of affection are best kept discreet, and the UK government warns that same-sex couples can be arrested for holding hands or kissing in public.
Planning notes
- Entry needs an e-visa and the mandatory insurance policy (USD 44, up to 92 days), covered by the UK entry requirements page.
- Malaria is present below about 1,800 m, so discuss tablets with a clinician before you go.
- Compare beachfront rooms on Booking.com’s Zanzibar listings .
- Short on days? The 2-day itinerary and the sightseeing guide help you trim.
Verdict: spend the money on the balloon and one fly-in night, and keep the beach stay simple.
