Tanzania Day Trips: Parks, Springs, Islands
Travel advisory: The US currently advises reconsidering travel to Tanzania, and the UK advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the border with Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. Arusha, Moshi and Zanzibar are not in that border zone. Read the US State Department and UK FCDO advice again just before you pay for anything.
Plenty of people ask whether the Serengeti works as a day trip. It does not, and the arithmetic explains why: about 8 to 9 hours by road from Arusha to Seronera, much of it gravel after the Ngorongoro gate. What does fit into a single day is a short list of parks, springs and islands.
Parks within a morning’s drive of Arusha
- Tarangire is roughly two hours south-west of Arusha. Baobab trees dot the savannah, and elephant herds gather along the Tarangire River.
- Lake Manyara is about two hours west. Groundwater forest, baboons, flamingos on the soda lake and its tree-climbing lions make a compact outing.
- Arusha National Park is the closest. Small Momella Lake has canoe trips for roughly USD 60 to 90 per person, and a ranger can lead a walk on foot.
Each park charges about USD 59 per adult per 24 hours in peak season (less in low season), with children 5 to 15 paying a reduced share and under-5s free. Gates take cards or e-payment only. Official details are at Tanzania National Parks .
Springs, coffee and waterfalls near Moshi
Chemka (Kikuletwa) springs are about 1 hour 15 minutes from Moshi or Arusha, with warm turquoise water under fig trees and a rope swing. Materuni is a rainforest walk to an 80 m waterfall, followed by a Chagga coffee session where you pound, roast and brew your own cup. Day prices run roughly USD 40 to 65 per person.
Zanzibar day outings
From Stone Town, a dhow reaches Changuu (Prison) Island in about 30 minutes, where Aldabra giant tortoises roam, and the sandbank at Bawe sits close by. Excursions cost roughly USD 30 to 50 per person depending on the operator. Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, about 45 minutes away by road, has red colobus monkeys and a mangrove boardwalk. Dress modestly in villages: shoulders and knees covered, and swimwear only at the beach.
Making a day trip work
- Start early, by 7:00 for the parks, because the drives eat the day.
- Bring a card for any gate fee, and keep USD notes recent and undamaged for tips.
- Leave plastic carrier bags at home, since they are banned.
- Pack malaria precautions, as the disease is present across the country below about 1,800 m.

Verdict: pick Tarangire for elephants, Manyara for scenery, and book the Serengeti as a multi-night stay.
