Tanzania Multi-Day Trips: Safari to Beach
Travel advisory: At the time you plan, the US advises reconsidering travel to Tanzania, and the UK advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Cabo Delgado border with Mozambique. When routing a long trip, keep clear of the southern border belt around Mtwara and Ruvuma. Look up the current US State Department and UK FCDO pages before paying deposits.
The best multi-day trips in Tanzania are built from four blocks: the northern safari circuit, a mountain, the southern reserve at Nyerere, and a stretch of beach. Combine two, and a ten-day holiday is already full.
Northern circuit, 3 to 7 days
The loop runs Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Budget three-day packages are reported at USD 600 to 1,200 per person, but park fees alone push the Serengeti and Ngorongoro legs well beyond USD 200 per person per day, so check what a quote includes. The Serengeti costs USD 82.60 per adult per 24 hours at peak, and Ngorongoro about USD 70.80 plus a USD 295 crater fee per vehicle.
A fair rule: three days gets you Tarangire, Manyara and the crater. The Serengeti needs at least two nights of its own, because the drive from Arusha takes about 8 to 9 hours. The Great Migration moves in a circuit all year, with calving in the south from January to March and Mara River crossings most likely from roughly August to September. Crossings are never guaranteed.
Kilimanjaro, 7 to 9 days
A registered operator and a guide are mandatory. Lemosho over 7 to 8 days and the Northern Circuit over 9 are the higher-success itineraries. Operators report summit rates of roughly 85 percent for seven-day Machame and 90 percent or more for eight-day Lemosho, against about 30 percent on five-day Marangu. Park fees for seven days on Machame are roughly USD 1,020 including VAT. Minimum age is 10.
Nyerere National Park, 2 to 4 days
The former Selous offers boat safaris and walking safaris. The best months are late June to November, and many lodges close in April and May. Scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam take under an hour with carriers such as Coastal Aviation and Auric Air , or you can drive for about five hours via Mikumi. Packages of two to three days are reported at USD 370 to 860 per person.
Zanzibar extension, 3 to 5 days
Fly from Arusha or Kilimanjaro, or take the ferry from Dar es Salaam. The Zanzibar official tourism site lists current information. Stone Town is UNESCO-listed, so cover shoulders and knees there and in the villages.
Paperwork for any combination
- E-visa before travel, via the immigration portal .
- Mandatory inbound insurance: USD 44, up to 92 days, one policy for the mainland and Zanzibar.
- Yellow fever certificate only when arriving from a risk country.
- Malaria precautions below about 1,800 m.
- No plastic carrier bags.
Putting it together
For a first visit, seven days is a workable base: four on the circuit, three on the coast. The 4-day itinerary covers the safari section in detail, and you can browse departures on Viator .
Verdict: choose Lemosho over a shorter mountain route if you are climbing, and book the safari first because lodge space is the scarcest item.
