Ghana Multi-Day Trips: Coast, Ashanti, North
Multi-day trips in Ghana
Ghana’s main sights run in a line from the coast up through the forest to Kumasi and then, far away, to the savannah. That geography gives two natural routes: a six-day circuit through the south, and a longer version that adds Mole National Park. Prices here are in Ghana cedis (GH₵), at about 11.7 to the US dollar in early October 2026, and they move.
Six days: Accra, the coast, Kakum and Kumasi
Days 1 and 2, Accra. Walk the Jamestown lighthouse and fishing harbour, spend a morning in Makola Market and ride out to the Teshie coffin studios. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park takes about an hour and costs GH₵100 for non-Ghanaian adults; it is open daily from about 08:30 to 23:00.
Day 3, Cape Coast. Take an Intercity STC coach (about 3.5 to 4.5 hours, roughly GH₵90 to GH₵130; see stc.gov.gh ) and use the afternoon for the Kakum canopy walkway: seven bridges, 333 m, up to 27 m high, guided groups only, open 06:00 to 16:00. Check the fee at the gate. Sleep in Cape Coast or Elmina.
Day 4, Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle. Both were slave-trade fortresses and are now places of remembrance. Foreign adults pay about GH₵80 at Cape Coast Castle, to be confirmed at the gate, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board lists its sites at gmmb.gov.gh . Allow a full morning for the guided visits and dress modestly.
The road north to Kumasi then takes several hours through the forest belt.
Day 5, Kumasi. Visit the Manhyia Palace Museum, home of the Asantehene’s regalia, then the craft villages of Bonwire for Kente and Ntonso for Adinkra cloth.
Day 6, Lake Bosomtwe and home. Spend the morning at the crater lake, then return to Accra by STC coach (4.5 to 6.5 hours, about GH₵120 to GH₵160) or fly Kumasi to Accra in about 40 minutes, a fare commonly quoted from GH₵900. For lodging in Kumasi, compare hotels on Booking.com .
Ten days: adding the north
Extend the circuit with an overland leg from Kumasi to Tamale (stopping at Kintampo Waterfalls on the way), then two nights at Mole National Park and a flight from Tamale to Accra of about one hour, with fares commonly quoted around GH₵1,200 to GH₵1,900. Book it through Africa World Airlines . At Mole, foreign adult entry is GH₵60 and a guided walk is GH₵20 per person per hour, led by armed rangers. Larabanga’s mud mosque lies at the park gate and makes a short stop. Mole cannot be added as a day out from Accra, because the road is about 690 km and 10 hours each way. The US government advises reconsidering travel to parts of northern Ghana, including areas of the Savannah Region, so read the US advisory and the UK FCDO’s Ghana advice before you book.
Practical points
- UK and US passport holders need a visa, applied for on the official e-visa portal at evisa.immigration.gov.gh , where you can check the current fee. A yellow fever certificate is required, and without one you may be refused entry or vaccinated on arrival.
- Malaria is present across Ghana all year, so ask a travel clinic about prophylaxis before you fly and use repellent from dusk.
- The Atlantic along Ghana’s open coast carries strong rip currents and heavy shore break, so swim only where locals are swimming, never alone and never at night.
- Carry cash in cedis for gates, markets and shared transport; larger Accra hotels and restaurants take cards, and mobile money is widely used.
- Coaches beat shared minibuses for long hauls: the Intercity STC timetable is the place to start.
Verdict: the six-day circuit is the better first trip, with a night each in Cape Coast and Kumasi. If you add the north, give it at least two nights, and see the 4-day Ghana itinerary for how to compress the south.
