Lyon Romantic Getaways: Sunset to Beaujolais
Lyon Romantic Getaways: Sunset, Supper and Vineyards
The most romantic hour in Lyon is free. It is the one after the funicular lets you out on the Fourvière esplanade and the city starts to light up below. Build the rest of the evening around that.
Afternoon in Vieux Lyon
Spend the early afternoon in the old town’s Renaissance streets. The astronomical clock in the Cathédrale Saint-Jean chimes at 12:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00, and entry is free. Traboules, the passages through residential courtyards, are open to the public from about 07:00 to 19:00. Go in quietly, stay briefly, and leave the groups behind.
Sunset at Fourvière
The funicular from Vieux Lyon takes a standard TCL ticket, €2.10 for a single. The basilica esplanade is free, and the basilica stays open later in summer, with hours on fourviere.org . On a clear morning you can even see Mont Blanc, though evenings give the glow over the red roofs.
Dinner, three ways
For a warm room, choose a restaurant holding the Les Bouchons Lyonnais label, listed on lesbouchonslyonnais.org . Café Comptoir Abel on rue Guynemer opens daily, with menus at about €32 to €49 on the tourist-office listing.
For height, Les Trois Dômes is a panoramic rooftop restaurant on the top floor of the Sofitel at 20 quai Docteur-Gailleton, with views over the Rhône. Check its current menu for prices.
For a real occasion, the Auberge du Pont de Collonges holds two Michelin stars in 2026. The restaurant is in Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or, roughly 15 minutes north of Lyon, and was Paul Bocuse’s flagship. It is a splurge, so look at the menu before you book.
A river hour
Les Bateaux Lyonnais runs one-hour cruises from quai des Célestins. A 2026 listing gives €15 for adults and €9 for children aged 3 to 10. Departures are during the day and early evening, and the schedule varies with the season, so check the Les Bateaux Lyonnais site for the times. The cruise is also covered by the Lyon City Card.
A day among golden stone
Oingt is the best-known village among the Pierres Dorées, about 30 to 45 minutes north of Lyon, where the local limestone glows in the afternoon. Without a car it is awkward, so a tour or a driver helps. Compare Beaujolais tours from Lyon for small groups. A half-day tasting starts from about €100 per person. Brouilly and Morgon are two of the local crus to look for.
Where to stay
Vieux Lyon puts you under the hill and close to the funicular. The Presqu’île puts you near the river and the shops. See Lyon hotels on Booking.com and compare cancellation terms.
Small practical things
Pickpockets work crowded streets and the metro, so keep valuables zipped. After dark, avoid lingering around Place Gabriel Péri in La Guillotière and use the well-lit main roads.

Tip: take the funicular up about 40 minutes before sunset, then walk down through Vieux Lyon to a booked table.
