Luxor to Aswan Nile Cruise: What to Expect
The classic multi-day trip from Luxor is a slow boat south. A Nile cruise turns the river into a moving hotel, and the temples arrive one after another with little packing and unpacking in between.
How long
Cruises from Luxor to Aswan run either 3 nights and 4 days, or 4 nights and 5 days. The 3 night version is a brisk trip with a stop each day. The 4 night version adds time ashore and a more relaxed pace. The cruise season starts around 1 October, and listings for the 2026-27 season run from roughly USD 670 to 1,750 per person on tour operator sites, depending on the boat and the cabin. Entrance fees are often extra, so ask what the fare covers.
The stops
The boat passes through the Esna lock, a slow and fascinating wait as the river level changes. Edfu is the Temple of Horus, among the most complete ancient temples in Egypt, usually reached by horse carriage from the dock. Kom Ombo is the double temple of Sobek and Haroeris, next to a small crocodile museum. The Aswan end of the cruise closes the route, with the Nile at its widest and calmest.
What to ask before booking
Check how many nights are on board and how many are tied at the dock. Ask which temples are included and whether entry is bundled. Confirm the cabin size, air conditioning and whether meals are full board. Comparing several boats on one list helps: you can browse Nile cruises on GetYourGuide and read the FCDO travel advice for Egypt before you travel.
Add days in Luxor first
Most travellers add two or three days in Luxor before they sail, because Karnak, Luxor Temple and the west bank deserve their own time. Entry tickets are paid by card at the main gates, so keep small EGP cash for ferries and tips. Adult prices are EGP 600 at Karnak, EGP 500 at Luxor Temple and EGP 440 at Hatshepsut’s temple. The three-day Luxor itinerary fits the days before boarding.
Heat
On deck the sun is strong, and June to August temperatures reach 42 to 46C. The cooler months of October to April are the comfortable time to be on the water. Bring a hat and sunscreen for the open deck.
Tip: choose your cruise nights first, then book your Luxor days at either end, so the boat is never the part you squeeze in.
