Beyond Panama City: 2 to 4 Day Trips
Panama’s best overnights start with an early alarm. The Guna Yala islands begin with a pre-dawn pickup, the Caribbean forts with a morning drive, and the highlands and Bocas with a short flight from the city’s domestic airport.
Guna Yala (San Blas), 2 to 3 days
A 4x4 covers the mountain road to Carti in about 2.5 to 3 hours, then a boat reaches the cabana islands. Bring cash only, since islands and cabins take no cards, and carry your passport. Expect an entry tax of $20 to $22 plus a port fee of $2 to $5. There is no scuba diving, but snorkelling, hammocks and fresh seafood are the point. One-day tours sell for $140 to $170 and last about 14 hours; one or two nights are far more relaxed. Before you go, check entry rules on Visit Panamá .
Portobelo and the Colón coast, 1 night
Portobelo has a colonial fort line, and the Iglesia San Felipe holds the Black Christ. Fort San Lorenzo sits further along the coast. The Agua Clara locks, open daily 08:00 to 17:00 at $5 to $10, fit this route. Do a day or an overnight, and avoid walking around Colón city centre.
Boquete and Bocas del Toro, 3 to 4 days
Both are reached by flights of roughly 50 minutes from Albrook airport (PAC), not Tocumen (PTY). Flights to David serve Boquete, a highland town known for Geisha coffee farms. Flights to Isla Colón serve Bocas del Toro and its islands. Prices change by season, so check airlines directly.
Sample three-day plan
- Day 1. Casco Viejo at sunrise, Miraflores at 09:00, and the Biomuseo, when it is open.
- Day 2. Early pickup for Guna Yala and a night on the islands.
- Day 3. Boat and 4x4 back, with an evening in the city.
What to pack
Bring a dry bag for boat rides, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent and a rain shell. Charge devices before you leave Panama City.
Tips for city bases
- Keep the hotel in Casco Viejo or near the Cinta Costera for early starts and easy Uber rides.
- Leave bulky luggage at the hotel; the tours take daypacks.
- Carry $20 notes and small bills for tips.
- See the three-day itinerary for how to fit the city around a trip.
- Check hotels in Panama City on Booking.com for a base with early breakfast.
Verdict: if you have only one extra night, spend it in Guna Yala. A second night makes sense for Boquete or Bocas, which each reward three days more than two.
