Taipei Isn't the Trip, It's the Launchpad
If you’re planning to spend your entire multi-day trip inside Taipei’s 12 districts, you’re leaving most of Taiwan unseen. The city’s real job is the two train stations that sit inside it, Taipei Main Station and Nangang, both feeding the High Speed Rail line that reaches most of the island in under two hours.
Here’s what that actually buys you, and where the fabled Taroko day trip idea falls apart.
Taichung and Sun Moon Lake, 2 days. THSR to Taichung takes 45 to 60 minutes, a shorter hop than most people expect. From there, a Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus reaches Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County, where the lakeside bike path and solar-powered boats across the alpine water are the draw, alongside Wenwu Temple.
Chiayi and Alishan, 2 to 3 days. THSR to Chiayi runs 75 to 85 minutes. The headline fact here isn’t a myth: the Alishan Forest Railway’s full 71.6 km main line from Chiayi to Alishan reopened end to end on July 6, 2024, after 15 years of typhoon repair work, so the narrow-gauge train through four climate zones to the Zhushan sunrise is genuinely running again. Online tickets open 14 days ahead and, as of March 2, 2026, require immediate payment, so don’t wait to book.
Tainan, 2 to 3 days. THSR runs 85 to 95 minutes to Taiwan’s oldest cultural capital: Chihkan Tower, Anping Old Fort, and a food list built on beef soup, milkfish, and eel noodles.
Kaohsiung and Kenting, 3 to 4 days. The THSR terminus at Zuoying is 95 to 110 minutes out. Pier-2 Art Center and the Great Harbor Bridge anchor a city day before the drive south to Kenting National Park’s beaches and reefs.
The east coast by conventional rail, 3 to 4 days. TRA express trains run from Taipei Main Station through Yilan toward Taitung and the East Rift Valley, with a ferry from Taitung out to Green Island for saltwater hot springs. Regular service to Hualien City runs fine, but don’t fold Taroko Gorge’s interior trails into this itinerary as an easy add-on: the April 3, 2024 earthquake shut down Swallow Grotto, Zhuilu Old Road, and other iconic sections for multi-year rehabilitation, and Highway 8 still runs under strict timed traffic releases. That myth needs to die before you build a schedule around it.
The round-island “Huan Dao” loop, 5 to 7+ days. South down the western corridor through Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, around the tip at Kenting, then back up the eastern coastal railway through Taitung and Yilan.
Verdict: three days is enough for Taichung and Sun Moon Lake with room to spare; give Chiayi and Alishan a fourth day of slack in case the mountain railway timing slips.
Book THSR seats online before a weekend departure; standing-room tickets exist but won’t guarantee you a seat on the busier southbound legs.
