Every guidebook sends couples to Din Tai Fung for soup dumplings and a wait that can run past an hour. Taipei has better ways to spend a date, and most of them cost less than the dumplings do.
Ride into the clouds instead of queuing. The Maokong Gondola departs beside Taipei Zoo for a flat NT$180 fare (add NT$50 for a glass-bottom crystal cabin), climbing 4.03 km into tea-growing hills. Get off at Maokong and settle in at Yao Yue Tea House, open 24 hours, or Camellia Tea House’s open terrace, both pouring Muzha Tieguanyin oolong over a view of the whole basin.
