Taoyuan Couples: Forget the Candlelit Cliche
Skip the candlelit-dinner-and-rose-petals script. Taoyuan’s actual couple activities run through a 1920s trading street, a designer outlet mall, and a mountain road that turns pink for six weeks a year.
Daxi Old Street, the unhurried version
Walk Heping Road hand in hand and look past the shopfronts at the stone carvings above them, peacocks, lotus flowers, and family seals cut into 1920s facades by camphor and tea traders who wanted their wealth visible. Share a bowl of warm douhua from a street vendor and call that dessert. No reservation, no dress code. Split a bag of hand-pulled peanut brittle afterward, rolled hot in front of you and coated in crushed peanuts, it’s built for sharing off one paper bag while you keep walking.
Gloria Outlets after dark
Gloria Outlets in Qingpu runs palm-lined, open-air pedestrian avenues lined with international designer boutiques at discount prices, and the al fresco cafes stay open into the evening. It’s a shopping mall, plainly, but it’s also a genuinely pleasant place to browse together and eat somewhere that isn’t a food court.
Cherry blossoms in Fuxing, January to March
Drive the winding mountain roads of Fuxing District between January and March, when thousands of cherry trees bloom along the hillsides of Zhongba and Lalashan. This is a seasonal window, not a year-round activity, so check bloom reports before you commit a weekend to the drive.
Picking the season
October through April keeps Taoyuan at a comfortable 18 to 24 degrees Celsius, ideal for a full afternoon walking Daxi Old Street without either of you wilting. Summer (June to August) pushes lowland temperatures to 30 to 34 degrees, which makes the air-conditioned Gloria Outlets the more sensible pick until evening cools things down. Either way, the currency is New Taiwan Dollar (NT$), never the Chinese yuan some outdated guides still reference; Taiwan runs its own entirely separate financial system.
Verdict: Daxi costs nothing and works any day of the year, the cherry blossom drive is worth planning around but only in season. For a more deliberately romantic itinerary built around Xpark and a mountain cabin, see our romantic getaways guide .
Concrete tip: carry NT$ cash for the Daxi Old Street vendors. Gloria Outlets takes international cards without issue, but the douhua stall and most craft boutiques on Heping Road do not, and neither will make change from a card reader that isn’t there.
