Skip Din Tai Fung for These Taipei Dates
Every guidebook sends couples to Din Tai Fung for soup dumplings and a wait that can run past an hour. Taipei has better ways to spend a date, and most of them cost less than the dumplings do.
Ride into the clouds instead of queuing. The Maokong Gondola departs beside Taipei Zoo for a flat NT$180 fare (add NT$50 for a glass-bottom crystal cabin), climbing 4.03 km into tea-growing hills. Get off at Maokong and settle in at Yao Yue Tea House, open 24 hours, or Camellia Tea House’s open terrace, both pouring Muzha Tieguanyin oolong over a view of the whole basin. Closed Mondays.
Skip the sit-down dinner for a container bar. Dadaocheng Wharf’s PIER5 market, right on the Tamsui River, fills at sunset with shipping-container bars serving craft beer next to gelato stands and taco vendors. It’s cheaper than a restaurant table and better for actually talking to each other.
Book a private room, not a public pool. Beitou’s tangwu tradition rents a private tub for about 90 minutes rather than a shared bathhouse. SweetMe Hot Spring Resort runs NT$800 to NT$1,200 a room; Grand View Resort Beitou’s cedar-accented stone rooms overlooking the thermal valley run NT$2,300 to NT$2,800. Either beats a candlelit dinner reservation for actual privacy.
Hike up before you eat, not after. Elephant Mountain’s stone staircase, roughly 600 steps from Xiangshan Station, takes 20 to 30 minutes and delivers a sunset view of Taipei 101 lighting up the Xinyi skyline. It’s lit for a night descent too, so you don’t need to time it to daylight.
Eat standing up, together. Ningxia Night Market’s Bib Gourmand oyster omelets or Raohe Night Market’s black pepper pork buns cost a fraction of a restaurant tasting menu and end at the lit-up Ciyou Temple.
One correction worth making before you book anything: RAW, the two-Michelin-star restaurant everyone still recommends for a date, closed permanently on December 31, 2024, and is now a culinary academy. It cannot be booked at any price. If you want a formal sit-down replacement, Mountain and Sea House does a Michelin-starred take on vintage Taiwanese banquet cuisine, or try the sky-dining floors of Breeze Xinyi.
Verdict: the gondola-plus-teahouse combo beats Din Tai Fung on every axis that matters for a date, quieter, cheaper, and with a view the restaurant can’t match.
Book the Beitou private room a few days out on weekends; walk-in slots at both SweetMe and Grand View disappear fast.
