Museums and Monument Visits in Pisa
Museums and monument visits in Pisa
Pisa’s organised sightseeing centres on the Piazza dei Miracoli monuments, four state museums and a private art palace. Prices are in euros and are 2026 figures, so confirm them before you go. Most state museums close on Mondays.
Piazza dei Miracoli
Cathedral entry is free, and any paid ticket includes an untimed Cathedral pass. The complete ticket without the Tower is EUR 11 and covers the Cathedral, Baptistery, Camposanto and the two museums. Adding the Tower makes it EUR 27. Under-11s with an adult enter the Cathedral, Baptistery, Camposanto and both museums free. Winter hours are 9:00 to 18:00, and summer evenings run to 22:30. Some Baptistery areas may be closed for restoration, so look at the official page first.
The Camposanto is a Gothic cloister holding the fresco cycle that was badly damaged in the Allied bombing of July 1944, when the burning roof timbers melted the lead onto the walls. The Museo delle Sinopie shows the reddish preparatory drawings that came to light beneath the frescoes. Visit both quietly. Official guided walks of about 90 minutes also run through the opapisa.it site and licensed local agencies, but prices are not published here.
State museums
- Museo delle Navi Antiche, Lungarno Ranieri Simonelli 16: about 30 Roman and Hellenistic ships found near Pisa San Rossore station in 1998. EUR 8, reduced EUR 2. Open Tuesday to Friday 8:30 to 14:00 and Saturday and Sunday 14:00 to 19:30.
- Museo Nazionale di San Matteo: painted crucifixes, a Masaccio panel and Donatello’s reliquary bust of San Rossore. EUR 5, reduced EUR 2. Open Tuesday to Saturday, with a shorter Sunday.
- Palazzo Reale, Lungarno Pacinotti 46: Medici and Savoy rooms and the wooden shields used in the Gioco del Ponte. EUR 5, reduced EUR 2. Open mornings except Friday, when it opens 14:00 to 18:30.
- Certosa di Calci: a Carthusian monastery reached by bus, entered by guided visit only. EUR 5, reduced EUR 2.
A seven-day pass for the four state museums is EUR 14, and San Matteo plus Palazzo Reale together is EUR 8.
Palazzo Blu and the Pisa Card
Palazzo Blu at Lungarno Gambacorti 9 has a permanent collection for EUR 5 (EUR 3 reduced), and large loan exhibitions are on show alongside it. The Pisa Card, about EUR 24 for seven days, includes one entry each to Palazzo Blu, the Mura di Pisa, Navi Antiche, Palazzo Reale, San Matteo, the Certosa di Calci and the Botanical Garden. It does not include the Leaning Tower or any cathedral-square monument, which are sold only by the cathedral authority. Resold “skip the line” Tower tickets cost more than the official EUR 20 to EUR 27, and every Tower ticket is a fixed 30-minute slot anyway.
