Walking routes in Siena Siena is built on three ridges that meet near the Campo, and the old city is divided into three districts called terzi: Citta in the southwest with the Duomo, Camollia in the north along Via Banchi di Sopra, and San Martino in the southeast around the Campo. The centre is closed to ordinary traffic, so walking is the way to see it, but the lanes are steep, in places with gradients of 18 to 20 per cent, and the paving is slippery stone.

Sightseeing in Siena The main sights cluster around two squares, Piazza del Campo and Piazza del Duomo, about ten minutes apart on foot. Two tickets cover most of them: the Duomo’s OPA SI PASS and the city’s Museo Civico tickets. Allow a full day for both, or two relaxed days. The Duomo complex The cathedral is a 13th-century Gothic building in black and white marble, with a carved marble pulpit by Nicola Pisano from the 1260s.

Romantic Siena for couples Siena suits couples who like to walk, sip wine in old cellars and watch the light change on brick. It has no beach or lake, so the romance here is stone, sunsets and long dinners, with a thermal spa a short drive away. Prices are in euros and worth checking before you book. Sunset on the Fortezza Medicea The Medici fortress, built in the 1560s after Florence defeated the Sienese republic, has brick ramparts and a flat, tree-lined circuit around them.

Multi-day trips from Siena Siena works as a base for southern Tuscany because three landscapes meet here: Chianti Classico to the north, the pale clay hills of the Crete Senesi to the east and the Val d’Orcia to the south. The city is compact and has good evening dining, and the roads out of it lead to each area. A four-day plan with a car is described below; without a car, stick to Siena, San Gimignano and Monteriggioni by bus and add a small-group tour for the south.

Family activities in Siena Siena is a good city for children who like climbing things, hunting for symbols and eating gelato, and a harder one for strollers. The old centre is steep, cobbled and full of steps with few kerb cuts, so a baby carrier works much better than a pushchair. Children under about 11 get cheap or free entry at most official sites, which helps the budget. Climbing for kids Torre del Mangia: 400 steps, no lift and no rest landings, so it suits fit older children only.

Day trips from Siena Siena sits between Chianti, the pale clay hills of the Crete Senesi and the Val d’Orcia, so it is a good base for day trips. The catch is transport: without a car, only a few destinations work well in a day. Here they are, ordered from easiest to hardest. Without a car San Gimignano: Autolinee Toscane line 130 runs Siena to Poggibonsi to San Gimignano. The fare is about EUR 8.

Attraction tours in Siena Most of Siena’s guided experiences are run by the institutions that own the buildings, so the best tickets come from the Duomo’s own Opera, the city council and the contrada neighbourhoods rather than from a general tour desk. Here is what is on offer, with the prices published for 2026. Porta del Cielo, the Duomo roof walk The Porta del Cielo is a guided route through the upper galleries of the cathedral and out onto the roof terraces, with views over the city towards Monte Amiata.

Things to do in Siena Siena is a compact hill city of brick and marble, and most of what visitors come for sits within a 15 minute walk of Piazza del Campo. The centre is a traffic-limited zone, so you do the whole visit on foot, and the streets are steep and paved with stone, so wear shoes with grip. Prices below are in euros; check the official sites before you go, because hours and ticket structures change.
