Walking Routes in Pisa
Walking routes in Pisa
Pisa is flat, compact and largely pedestrian, which makes it a good city to explore on foot. The routes below can be walked on your own, and licensed guides run similar ones. Prices are in euros and are 2026 figures, so check them before you go.
From the Miracoli to Tuttomondo (about 2 km, 2.5 to 3 hours)
Start at the Piazza dei Miracoli and leave through Porta Nuova. Walk down Via Santa Maria, past university faculties and old palaces, to Piazza dei Cavalieri with its Vasari facades. Continue through the arcades of Borgo Stretto to Piazza delle Vettovaglie, a daily food market and aperitivo square. Cross the Arno on Ponte di Mezzo, pass under the Logge di Banchi, walk the shopping street Corso Italia and finish at the Keith Haring mural, Tuttomondo, on the church of Sant’Antonio Abate. Pisa Centrale is a short walk from there.
The city walls (3.1 km, up to 2 hours)
The Mura di Pisa walkway sits about 11 metres above the street. Tickets are EUR 5, EUR 3 reduced or EUR 15 for a family, free to age 8, plus a EUR 1.50 booking fee. Allow about an hour end to end, longer with photo stops. Torre Santa Maria on the cathedral square gives a view down onto the Baptistery and Tower. Other entry points are Torre Piezometrica, Torre di Legno, Piazza delle Gondole and Bastione del Parlascio, and lifts at several of them serve buggies and wheelchairs. Hours run from 10:00 to 17:00 in winter up to 10:00 to 20:00 from April to August. The walk is closed in bad weather.
A Galileo walk (about 1.5 km)
Galileo was born in Pisa in 1564. Begin at the Cathedral, where the story of his pendulum observation is told, then see the Tower, where tradition says he dropped weights. Walk to Via Giuseppe Giusti 24 to 26 to see the plaque on the house of his mother’s family. It is a private home, so view it from the street only. Finish at the Palazzo della Sapienza on Via Curtatone e Montanara, a central seat of the University of Pisa, where he studied and later taught.
The Jewish cemetery and synagogue
The Jewish cemetery near Porta Nuova has been in use since 1674, and the synagogue stands on Via Palestro. Both are visited only on a guided visit booked through CoopCulture. The 2026 tourism office prices are EUR 3 for the cemetery, EUR 4 for the synagogue or EUR 6 for both, plus EUR 1 booking, and visits are not held on Saturdays or Jewish holidays. Treat these as places of remembrance and worship, not as photo backdrops.
Practical tips
Wear flat shoes, as the old pavements are uneven. The historic centre is a camera-enforced restricted traffic zone, so if you have a car, park outside the walls. Keep valuables close in crowds near the Tower and the station. Pisa Centrale to the Piazza dei Miracoli on foot is about 20 to 25 minutes, or 1.8 km. A bus from the station to the Torre stop also runs.
