Day Trips from Pisa by Train and Bus
Day trips from Pisa
Pisa Centrale is the rail hub of western Tuscany, so most day trips start with a regional train. Fares below are rough figures from booking sites, so check Trenitalia before you buy. Trains and buses run all day, but allow a margin on the way back if you have a flight.
Lucca
Lucca is the easy first choice: about 25 to 31 minutes by regional train, with departures roughly every 30 minutes and a fare of about EUR 4 to 5. The Renaissance walls form a 4.2 km tree-lined ring closed to cars, and hiring a bike to ride it is a popular way to spend a morning. Inside, the oval Piazza dell’Anfiteatro follows a Roman amphitheatre. Torre Guinigi, with holm oaks growing on its roof, and the clock tower Torre delle Ore are each about EUR 8, or EUR 6.50 reduced, with a combined ticket around EUR 19. Booking is compulsory on weekends and holidays.
Livorno and Viareggio
Livorno is 12 to 15 minutes away and costs about EUR 3. Its Venezia Nuova canal quarter, the brick Fortezza Vecchia and the checkerboard Terrazza Mascagni promenade fill a half day, and fish stew, cacciucco, is the local dish. Viareggio is 13 to 19 minutes away for about EUR 4. It has a long sandy beach lined with Art Nouveau buildings on Viale Regina Margherita, and its Carnevale parades take place in February.
Florence
Fast regional trains reach Firenze Santa Maria Novella in about 50 to 60 minutes, and slower ones take 75 to 80. A fare is about EUR 9. The Uffizi, the Accademia and the Ponte Vecchio are all in Florence, not Pisa, and a single day there is best spent on two or three sights.
Cinque Terre
This is a long first look, not a relaxed day. Pisa Centrale to La Spezia takes about 45 to 75 minutes, then local trains reach the villages. Plan on two or three villages and an evening train back. The 2026 one-day adult cards are the Trekking card at EUR 10 (EUR 15 on peak days) and the Train card at EUR 22, EUR 29.50 or EUR 35 depending on how busy the day is. Several trail sections close or need a timed permit, so read the park site first.
Closer to Pisa
- Calci: about 10 km east, reached by bus Linea 120 in 25 to 30 minutes. The Certosa is guided visits only, and the university natural history museum costs EUR 15, with some galleries closed for refurbishment.
- Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia: bus Linea 10, with a single ticket of EUR 2.90 valid for 90 minutes. Much of the sand belongs to private lidos, and free beaches may have no lifeguard, so swim at a lido in season and check the day’s flag.
- Volterra: about 65 km away, around 1 hour 15 minutes by car or regional bus, for the Etruscan museum and alabaster workshops.
