Romantic Sibiu: Old Town, Cellars, Sunsets
A romantic stay in Sibiu
Sibiu suits couples who like old streets, good food and slow evenings more than sightseeing marathons. The Upper Town is compact, so a dinner, a bridge and a tower can fit into one walk. Plan for evenings, when the squares thin out, and wear shoes you can manage on cobbles.
Sunset from the cathedral tower
The tower of the Evangelical Cathedral on Piața Huet is about 73 m high and is the best panoramic climb in the city. It is a steep, narrow climb, and a small fee covers the church and tower, usually between 5 and 15 RON. Closing time depends on the season, so confirm before you go, and plan the climb for late afternoon. The Council Tower between Piața Mare and Piața Mică is closed for restoration until about the end of 2027, so you can only admire it from the square. Read the tourism office note on the Council Tower for its status.
The Old Town after dark
Walk from Piața Mare to Piața Mică, then cross the Bridge of Lies, the first cast-iron bridge in Romania. Legend says it got its name from the tall tales of market women, and it is a short, free crossing. From there, follow Strada Ocnei down towards the Lower Town, or take the Passage of Stairs, a stair link with origins in the 14th century. The pastel houses along the Cibin are quiet in the evening. The roof windows, known as the eyes of Sibiu, are oval vents built to ventilate attic storage.
In winter, the Christmas Market fills Piața Mare from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with free entry and evening opening until 22:00. See the market site for the programme.
Dinner
Crama Sibiul Vechi, on Strada Alexandru Papiu-Ilarian, is a vaulted cellar. Most dishes are about 45 RON, so a dinner is roughly 60 to 80 RON per person, and reservations are advised. Restaurant Hermania, on Strada Filarmonicii, serves a Saxon and Transylvanian menu with trout in a historic former concert-hall building. Hours are listed as 11:00 to 24:00, so check before you go. Try telemea cheese, ciorbă ardelenească and plăcintă on local menus.
Where to stay
Noblesse Boutique Hotel, on Strada Blănarilor, is a small property of about 10 rooms with no lift, near the station. Hotel Împăratul Romanilor, at Strada Nicolae Bălcescu 4, is in a historic building on the main street. Confirm rates directly. You can compare more options on Booking.com .
A summer lake day
From late May to the end of September, you can spend a lazy day at the Ocna Sibiului salt lakes, about 15 to 20 km from the city, which charge about 25 to 35 RON per adult depending on the date. Lacul Binder, Sibiu’s own lake complex, is open from 1 May and offers SUP and kayak rental, a beach and a cable ski. Its site, laculbinder.ro , has current prices and swimming rules. Both are summer-only.
