Multi Day Trips From Sibiu by Car
Multi day trips from Sibiu
Sibiu itself fills about two days. Beyond that, the city works as a base for a Transylvania loop by car. This page lays out realistic routes and their seasonal limits. If you only have two or three days, stay in the city and add one or two day trips instead of stretching the plan.
Two days in the city
On day one, walk the Upper Town: Piața Mare, Piața Mică and Piața Huet, then climb the Evangelical Cathedral tower and visit the Brukenthal Palace. On day two, go out to the ASTRA open-air museum and the neighbouring zoo, then spend the evening in the Lower Town along the Cibin. The Council Tower is closed for restoration until about the end of 2027, so plan the panorama from the cathedral tower. Brukenthal branches open Wednesday to Sunday on the winter schedule, so avoid Monday and Tuesday for museums.
Saxon churches circuit, 3 to 4 days by car
This route runs from Sibiu to Biertan, Sighișoara, Viscri and Brașov.
- Biertan is 67 to 70 km north-east of Sibiu, about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 35 by car, and it is a UNESCO fortified church village.
- Sighișoara is a UNESCO historic centre about 90 km from Sibiu.
- Viscri is also a UNESCO fortified church village, about 116 km and 1 hour 50 minutes from Sibiu by road, so it is nearer two hours than one.
- Brașov, about 114 km from Sibiu, has the Black Church and Council Square.
Trains serve Mediaș, Sighișoara and Brașov, but not the villages. To reach Biertan without a car, take the train to Mediaș and then a taxi. The UNESCO listing for the fortified church villages names the sites. A hire car is the practical way to string the villages together. Sibiu airport has car hire, but check the firms and prices yourself.
Mountain road loop, summer only
Drivers sometimes link the Transfăgărășan to Vidraru and Curtea de Argeș, then continue on the Transalpina. The high sections are seasonal, open roughly from June or July to late October depending on weather. CNAIR closed the Transfăgărășan high section on 27 October 2026 and the Transalpina high section on 26 October 2026, so neither is open now. Check CNAIR and Infotrafic before you plan it. Cabana Bâlea Lac stands by the lake, but its year-round opening is not confirmed, so confirm directly if you want to stay there.
If you drive in the mountains, keep food sealed in the car and never stop for bears or feed them. Feeding wild bears is illegal and fined.
Winter version
In winter, the plan changes. Păltiniș, about 35 km from Sibiu, has the Arena Platoș ski area, and Tursib bus 22 serves it. The Sibiu Christmas Market runs 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 in Piața Mare, with free entry. Allow extra driving time on mountain roads in snow.
Where to sleep
Stay in Sibiu for the city days, and book a guesthouse near the villages only if you want a slower pace. Compare stays on Booking.com . The Sibiu airport transport page lists the city buses that connect the terminal to the centre.
