Romantic Salzburg for Couples
A romantic break in Salzburg
Salzburg suits couples because its best moments are quiet ones: a lit fortress at dusk, a chamber concert in a marble hall, dinner in a room that has served guests for centuries. The old town is small and walkable, so a weekend is enough. Prices below are 2026 figures or ranges; confirm before booking.
Evening on the Makartsteg and the river bank
The pedestrian Makartsteg bridge (also called the Marko-Feingold-Steg) is covered in love locks, and the stretch along Franz-Josef-Kai beyond it gives a clear view of Hohensalzburg lit against the night sky. Start at golden hour and walk toward the old town as the lights come on.
Chamber concert in Mirabell Palace
The Marble Hall in Mirabell Palace holds the Schlosskonzerte, candlelit chamber concerts of Mozart, Vivaldi and Beethoven. Tickets run from about EUR 38 to EUR 48. Mozart and his sister Nannerl are said to have played for the prince-archbishop in this palace, which adds to the atmosphere. The gardens outside are free and look best in the morning before the tour groups arrive.
Dinner at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium
Tucked inside the St. Peter abbey precinct, this restaurant claims a documented history back to the year 803, which makes it one of Europe’s oldest. Dining rooms range from stone vaults to Baroque salons. The Mozart Dinner Concert, with singers in period costume between courses, costs roughly EUR 75 to 95 per person before drinks. Reserve well ahead, especially in August.
A drink above the rooftops
The Steinterrasse, on top of Hotel Stein at Steingasse 1, is a roof terrace with views of the fortress, the cathedral domes and the river. Go before sunset and book a table in summer.
A day out at Lake Fuschl
About 20 km east of Salzburg, Schloss Fuschl is a former archbishops’ hunting lodge on a peninsula. Lakeside terrace dining and a shore path make a relaxed half day. Buses and car hire both reach it; check the timetable if you travel by public transport.
Slow walks
The Mönchsberg ridge path, reached by the lift (EUR 3.40 single, EUR 4.80 return), has quiet viewpoints over the roofs. The Hellbrunn gardens hold the glass gazebo from The Sound of Music, which can be seen from outside only, and the grounds are lovely early in the day. In Advent the Christkindlmarkt on Dom- und Residenzplatz is planned for roughly 19 November to 1 January 2027; check dates before you travel.
Where to stay
The old town and the Right Bank near Linzer Gasse put you within a few minutes of everything. Book early for the Festival (17 July to 30 August 2026) and for Advent weekends.
