Salzburg With Kids
Salzburg with children
Salzburg is easy with kids because the old town is flat, car-free in the centre and small. The best family stops are a trick-fountain palace, a natural history museum, one zoo and a puppet theatre. Prices are 2026 figures; family tickets are noted where they exist.
Hellbrunn trick fountains
Archbishop Markus Sittikus built Hellbrunn in 1615 as a summer residence with water jokes built in: jets spring from stone seats, a stone dining table and the paths during the guided tour, so bring a change of clothes in warm weather. There is also a mechanical theatre with 163 moving figures. The fountains and palace open daily from late March to 1 November 2026 and close to the public after that. Admission is about EUR 16.50 for adults, EUR 6.50 for children aged 4 to 18 and EUR 36.50 for a family of two adults and one child; these are reseller figures, so check the official site. Take bus 25 from the centre. The park is open on its own, and the glass gazebo from The Sound of Music stands in it.
Haus der Natur
On Museumsplatz, this museum has an aquarium with 42 tanks, a reptile zoo with more than 200 animals, dinosaur models and a science centre with hands-on physics. Entry is EUR 16 for adults, EUR 10.50 for children aged 4 to 15 and EUR 48 for a family of four. It is the best wet-day option in the city.
Salzburg Zoo
There is one zoo, Tiergarten Hellbrunn, on the south side of the Hellbrunn park below a rock face. It keeps around 1,500 animals, including rhinos, bears, ibex and jaguars. Adults pay about EUR 17 and children aged 4 to 14 about EUR 7, with a family ticket near EUR 39.50; treat these as approximate.
Marionette Theatre
The Salzburger Marionettentheater on Schwarzstraße is on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. It stages shortened family shows with puppets about two feet tall. Adult seats run roughly EUR 28 to 43 and children under 12 pay about EUR 15, so confirm the schedule before booking.
Salt mine and other options
Salzwelten at Hallein has miners’ slides and a raft over an underground lake, but children must be at least 4 years old. The Mönchsberg lift (EUR 3.40 single, EUR 4.80 return) is a short ride children enjoy, and Mirabell Gardens has the Dwarf Garden with stone figures.
Using the Salzburg Card
Children aged 6 to 15 pay half price. In high season a 24 hour child card is EUR 19, and it covers Hellbrunn, the zoo, Haus der Natur and the lift once each. Under 6s are free at most sights.
Salzburg’s own river is a busy city waterway, so do not plan paddling or swimming there.
