Salzburg Guided Tours and Attractions
Guided tours in Salzburg
Organised tours in Salzburg cluster around two themes: the filming locations of The Sound of Music and access to the city’s performing arts venues. A hop-on hop-off bus covers the general sights in between. Prices are 2026 figures and the ones marked “from” or “about” can change, so confirm with the operator before you commit.
The Sound of Music coach tour
Panorama Tours has run its Original Sound of Music Tour since 1969. It is a 4 hour narrated coach trip that leaves daily at 9:15 and 14:00 from the terminal beside Mirabellplatz (Hubert-Sattler-Gasse 1). Stops include Mirabell Gardens, a view of Schloss Leopoldskron from the lake shore, the Nonnberg Abbey viewpoint and the glass gazebo in the Hellbrunn park. The coach then heads into the Salzkammergut to Mondsee and the church of St. Michael, used as the wedding church in the film. The operator lists the tour from about EUR 70, and resellers often show EUR 75. Child fares are not clearly published, so ask when booking.
Schloss Leopoldskron is a private hotel and seminar centre, so tours see it from outside only. The gazebo stands in the public Hellbrunn gardens and can be viewed from outside; the interior is kept locked.
Festival theatres backstage tour
The Salzburg Festival runs a 50 minute guided tour through the Grosses Festspielhaus, the House for Mozart and the Felsenreitschule, the former riding school cut into the Mönchsberg rock. Tickets are about EUR 10 for adults and EUR 5 for students and children. The ticket office is at Hofstallgasse 1. Tours are normally scheduled around 14:00, but rehearsals can cancel them, so check the festival site first.
Hop-on hop-off bus
Salzburg Sightseeing Tours runs a yellow line from Mirabellplatz past the Mozarteum, Hanuschplatz, Schloss Leopoldskron and Hellbrunn to the airport. The 2026 season ran from late March to early October. A 24 hour ticket was EUR 30 for adults and EUR 17 for children, a 48 hour ticket EUR 33 and EUR 21. It does not run in winter, so plan walking or city buses then.
Choosing a tour
- For a first morning, the coach tour covers the countryside locations that are hard to reach by bus.
- For architecture and music, the backstage tour is cheap and short.
- If you hold a Salzburg Card, the fortress, Hellbrunn and the river cruise are included once, so you can skip a guided option for those.
- Rain changes things: the coach and the theatre tour both work indoors or from a seat.
