That kind of disagreement is common enough among Vienna’s day trips that it’s worth knowing the real numbers before you book.
Wachau Valley and Melk Abbey
Direct trains from Wien Westbahnhof reach Melk in about an hour, covering roughly 90km. The Wachau-Ticket bundles that train ride with Melk Abbey admission and a boat leg between Krems and Melk, and since no two sources agree closely enough on price, budget for the higher end of the €51-68 range rather than the lower. Bratislava in 56 Minutes
October 2025’s rail electrification cut the Vienna-Bratislava REX journey to as little as 56 minutes, with departures roughly every hour. Slovakia shares both the euro and the Schengen zone with Austria, so the trip involves no currency exchange and no border check, just a different capital city for the price of a short train ticket. Salzburg’s Real Travel Time
The fastest option, Railjet Express, takes about 2 hours 22 minutes each way. Regular Railjet trains run 2h31 to 2h53, and Westbahn, a separate operator working out of Westbahnhof, covers it in 2h28 to 2h38. None of those numbers make Salzburg a light day trip; treat it as a city that rewards an overnight more than a rushed there-and-back.
Hallstatt Is Not on This List
It’s roughly 285km and three hours by car, or three and a half to four hours by train plus a lake ferry, since Hallstatt’s station sits across the water from the village itself. That distance belongs to an overnight, not a single-day itinerary, and the multi-day trips guide covers it properly.
Two Smaller Options
Eisenstadt, about an hour by train, centers on the Esterházy Palace and Joseph Haydn’s former workplace. Neusiedler See, a real lake in the same region, sits 46 to 56km from Vienna, closer to an hour’s drive than some shorter estimates suggest.
